A friend of mine is a trucker. He gave me two cb's to mess with. One cb when you apply power to it and turn on the switch r56 by the final burns up and i have not been able to find out why. Do these cobra night watches have a common problem with shorting out. The other radio cannot even be hooked to power cuz it starts smoking right off the bat. Anybody have any experiences like that?
 

Sorry, I just saw this thread...hope it's not too late!

I had the same problem with R56 on a Cobra 29. It turned out to be the insulator between the final and the chassis was bad. Check out the thread here:

Also, the one that starts smoking when you hook up power: There should be a diode by the power leads on the inside of the radio (not looking at the schematic and going off the top of my head). Perhaps that diode has gone dead short?
