Counterpoise for HT: Worth doing?

I have just heard of a using a countepoise for HT's, do they do good, harm, or nothing at all? Thanks in advance.

Wont hurt anything and may help a bit, but not as much as replacing the rubber duck antenna.Counterpoise I suspect will help more at VHF than UHF.

Yes, what I heard was replace the duck with an antenna around a quarter wavelength and add the counterpoise. So it's not total BS? Thanks for the reply.

I've used a 'tiger tail' - or 'counterpoise' if you like - on both a stock rubber duck and an aftermarket antenna. It will improve either one. Makes a measurable difference.

A few years ago my QTH was on the edge of the local repeater for HT use. I tried one and it was good enough for me to use the HT on the repeater.

Anything that makes a stubby duck more than a radiating dummy load is worth a try.

Made one. Terminal eye, shrinkable tube, some wire and it's done. It does make a difference too. Around 2 s-units from a repeater around 80km away that I can hit marginally from my rooftop. Thanks guys.
