Cushcraft D40

It is a dipole, and can be rotated which is a plus,

If you can get it 1/2 wl in the air it will work fine for local and dx.

i was thinking about getting the roof mount section then add a section of tower then sit that in top of it
the winds in westtexas are pretty gusty

Is there a better or more gain 40 meter monoband antenna

If you can not get the dipole 1/2 wl in the air get it as high as you can.

I do not know how high the rooftop and a section of tower is that you mentioned.

If you can not get the dipole 1/2 wl in the air and you have a roof top mount.

A vertical works great DX, you would need 4 to 8 1/4wl radials, lay on your roof and it would be a killer DX antenna.

Then just build you a simple 1/2 wl dipole and use any trees for supports for local rag chews.

It is a bit pricey but it does work fairly well. The main advantage is not from the gain but rather from the ability to reject interfering stations. I have a friend that uses one at 54 feet and it works great. Roy says it exhibits a textbook pattern with two deep nulls off the ends and rotating it makes a big difference in the ability to dig a station out of the QRM.
