Had my first ever experience of attending the Dayton Hamvention in Xenia, Oh today. It is quite an event. Everything and anything you could you want for all things radio. Five large fairground buildings filled with both large and small vendors along with at least a couple acres of radio flea market. Very well organized, easy access parking with shuttles to the entrance gate. Loads of food vendors. Fair prices.

The highlight for me was shaking hands with BJ Radionut and a half dozen other fine gentlemen from around the eastern US that I talk to mornings on 6m SSB. It was a real pleasure to put a face to the callsign and was my main reason for going.

Anyone in this hobby, no matter what band you operate on, would enjoy a visit to this huge hamfest.

I had a great time, very enjoyable.

Big crowd around the Yaesu booth and the new FTDX1.

Big crowd around the Flex Radio booth, I think they also released something new ($$$$).

I'm not in the market for new radios so I really didn't pay much attention. Spent more time gawking at antennas, some I'd never seen live and in person before.

Nice!

I was expecting to see Kenwood replace the mighty 590 with a mid level price radio to compete with the Icom 7300 and the Yaesu FTDX10.

Nothing wrong with the TS590SG but it's been out for years. The current trend is SDR or SDR hybrids with color screens which makes the 590 look antiquated. I still have my 590 and it works great interfaced in as a true sub-receiver for the TS890.

I seen the ads a couple weeks ago for the new Yaesu QRP rig and the optional 100 watt amp both powered by lithium batteries which would be great for people who do quick portable operating.

One of these years I will make the trek to Xenia and see what a large Ham fest is like.

Skipped Hamvention for only the fifth time since 1970. The memorial gathering for an old friend/former employee was Sunday. He didn't have a funeral or even a newspaper obit. Wouldn't miss that.

It was a different event in 1970. Just relieved to hear attendance is back up at the new venue each year. With any luck I'll be around for next year's Hamvention.
