Need a little more info. 1) Are you licensed or plan on getting licensed? 2) If licensed, is there alot of activity in your area on 2 meter AND 70cm? (This will help decide if a single band will work or if you want a dual band) 3)Are you looking for a mobile or HT?

Best Deal on a 2 meter Mobil - Base, is the Yaesu FT 2800M

in my opinion also.

Simple mod it will TX from 137.000 to 170.000 at 159.00

For MURS the Radio Shack Base model 19-1210 is on sale for

19.97 !!!!

It was at 199.00 at one time and can easy do 5 watts even though

2 watts is legal maximum.

Also the 19-1207 is on sale and it is a HT.

They may be hard to find at that price now, but can find new ones

on e-Bay for around 50.00 to 60.00

Like you said just for listening, then the Scanner may be a good

option for 2 meters and reduce the temptation

Other than the scan is a bit slow, I like the Kenwood TM-G707. Good little radio if you don't need dual RX or cross band repeat. It WILL scan both UHF & VHF freq.s you have programed into memory. $269.00 shipped to your door ain't bad.

Another good antenna is the Hustler CG 144 Colinear antenna, about 7` tall and also 5+Db gain on 2 meters.

They run about $32 and will fit a standard 3/8 x 24 Mount.

I have been running these for years and they are Great!

If you plan to up grade, they will also work on ten meters!

I think you will be very happy with the FT-2800. I really like mine. The big display/big buttons make it nice when mobile and the radio is built like a tank. I prefer a external speaker but the one built in isn't bad. Mount a mini speaker on the dash in front of you at the windshield base with some velcro and the audio will blow your hair back.

You will find that VHF/UHF is ALOT different then HF/11 meters. It dosent take hardly any power, but a clear line of sight from one point to the other be it radio to radio or radio to repeater. I can hit our local UHF repeater from 50 miles away ( if I'm in a "good" spot ) with just my HT , "ducky" antenna and 5 watts. I know because I checked in to the ARES net last week end with it. I also have no problem at all from a town 35-40 miles away with just 2 watts

I have what may to some be some stupid questions, here is the first was looking at maybe getting a dual band 2 meter and was going to have it modified i know this is possable.

Should i get a dual bander ? or stay with the single band ? also is it worth the extra money for the dual band ? and what would performe the single or dual ?

All I'm looking to do with it is maybe use it hunting a little and for listening as well. And also the Murs Freq. I know there are some real good folks on here that will post me some links to look at ? or other options and thanks ahead of time for the reply's. looking to spend no more than $200.00 if at all possable ? one more what would be a good ant for distance and being in the brush as well ?
