So I won this microphone on eBay today, I have high doubts that it would work on today's radios, if it works at all.

My question is, should I attempt to retrofit a newer microphone crystal in it and it's cord, or simply leave it alone for its historical value?

It's a carbon microphone and needs a bias voltage to work. Either keep it as is for a conversion piece or replace the element.

I'd like to use it and thought about placing a rk56 element inside, wasn't sure if I should replace the cord as well. Just plan on using it at home. Just going to be used on my galaxy radios.

Just leave it be and keep it as it is like CK said. All you are doing by changing the element is making it an RK56 with a differnet case. Not worth the effort IMO. Why ruin a piece of history. JMHO.
