I've been searching for drive specs for a straight 4 pill 2879 RedDot Fatboy and come up empty handed . I would like to drive it with my RCI2995DX 4-45 watt deadkey and swings 125 -190 watts average . I just wanted to make sure that the 125-190 swing wouldn't be too much input or if i would be better off adding a switch to my radio to turn the internal (2-2290 Toshibas) amp off driving the Fatboy with around a 2-4watt deadkey and swinging around 60 watts average.

I would turn off the internal 2 pill. The red dots might be able to take more drive than today's pills but I don't think they would take that much and live a long time. I run a Stryker 955 into an Xforce 4 pill and sometimes I wish it was a 6 pill.

An amplifier to match that radio would have eight transistors, typically.

Max PEP drive per 2879 is about 15, average modulated drive closer to 3, max 4.

Carrier drive power is not so clear cut. Amplifiers are not all created equal in that department. Best rule of thumb is 30 to 40 Watts carrier max OUTPUT per 2879. Set the radio's drive carrier to achieve this. Feel free to measure the radio's carrier power needed to obtain this result, but predicting whether that's 1.5 Watts, 2.5 or more depends way too much on the construction of that particular amplifier.

Pretty sure that radio turns out to be about twice the size that would be safe for four transistors.

Then again, this is what people seem to want to do. Use a large radio with a small amplifier.

Keeps the repair guys and RF-transistor dealers in business.
