Galaxy DX 2547 Base potential ?

I have 2 2547's a few 959's, and a couple of Ranger Freedom One's. All the same really. They all have extra channels and it is pretty easy to do. If you get a Viagra board, the Les Com version it's even easier, pretty much plug and play. All work well for me. I tend to use a Turner desk mic on the bases, and Turner hand mics or even some of the newer Cobra power mics and usually get good reports. There's always the guys that tell you you're off frequency etc., etc.
As long as you like the rig and you can talk I say go for it. A lot of guys are using amateur radios out of band, and to tell the truth, CB sounds better on CB in my experience. I have a few HF rigs, but I use Cb's on the chicken Band and the uppers and lowers.
Yes they drift a little until they warm up or adjust to the environment, but after that they're pretty steady.
Just my opinion.
I use the 2980 for local and the extra channels.
I have and use a Cobra 29 Competition and a Cobra 29 with variable power for skip use only.

Yeah that's what the admin from the other forum had put in, the Viagra board and some other goodies. I'm going to do it so if my Cobra 2000 takes a sudden crap on me I'll be ready to Rock and Roll. I'd love to get time to study for a Ham license but between my work and my elderly family I'm kind of Full Up. PS. I also have 2 Galaxy DX 979s I enjoy
There ya go:)

I have an old school 2970 hooked up if I want to step it up a bit, but right now, and lately, I've been playing with the McKinley EU I got from Undertaker. I pretty much sandbag, but jump in now and then. I'm staying quite now as I'm trying to get over some kind of virus I picked up...not the chinavirus.

Like low modulation? I’ve heard those radios don’t have the strongest sounding audio. I’ve seen a few videos of techs upgrading them. I know there are plenty of mods for it. I’d find a reputable tech to send it to and see what they recommend. I’ve never heard of the shop you got it from so idk about their quality of work. I know a couple people that bought their radios and had them modded from truck Cb sales. I was able to take one of their radios to class with me to look at it on the scope and spectrum analyzer and it was clean. So I called Brian at truck Cb sales and ordered my Anytone 6666 with everything he offers for it. Erf2030+ finals, upgraded caps, upgraded voltage regulator, upgraded the audio, tune, alignment. I took it to class also to check it on the scope and spectrum analyzer and it was good to go. I get nothing but compliments. You could email or call him and see what he can do for you. I know right now he’s a little backed up and might not be taking mail ins for a few weeks.

I found my headphones and extension cord for them and did a little sound test on the galaxy 2547 this morning and it didn't sound bad to me but there was some feed back in the head phones so I couldn't give it a good test. Guess I gotta get my buddy to set at my radio and take my mobile and go listen to it. Trouble with him he is the curious type that can't keep his hands off the clairifier so you never know what he's trying to adjust. He use to be a DXer years ago but I can't get him back into it again. One thing for sure I have too many radios so I'm not buying anymore until I get rid of some and I'm not going to take a beating on them. I have a replacement McKinley in transit right now from President Radio to replace the lemon I bought before and don't even know if I'll open it up. The age old question ( Shall I Go or Shall I Stay )

To listen to myself over the air I have a very basic cheap uniden hand held I use. What I’ve done to help out with feed back is actually take off the antenna completely on the handheld. Because it’s so close it still picks me up good but without feedback. Also if you’re lucky you can look for at live streams on YouTube or Facebook and see if you have conditions there so you can hear your audio on the video. There is a YouTube channel Oregon DX that is always running a live stream usually has his radio on channel 18. I can hear myself on his videos just about everyday. And then Cb Radio skip Macintosh 219 is another channel that usually records and post videos. He’s usually on 38lsb. He did a live video a couple days ago and I caught it just in time. Made contact with him and heard myself on side band. I only know a few people locally that have Cb radios and they’re usually out of town for work so I had to find another way to hear myself.

That's the way it is here, gotta travel about 25 miles to find CB traffic and with the way skips been rolling you can't really hear the local traffic now. Guess people get tired of trying to beat it.

I’ve been back in the hobby for about 7 months or so. Last time I was in the hobby was back in 2006 and there was way more traffic then. Every trucker had a radio and actually talked on them. There are a few major highways that run through town so back then at any time of the day or night there would be full conversations going on. When I got back into it 7 months ago I thought something might be wrong with my radio cause I couldn’t make a contact, it was at night. At night it’s dead here now. During the day you can get truckers passing through town and skip. If it wasn’t for skip I wouldn’t have anyone to talk to. Glad skip is rolling everyday now.

Welcome to the cell phone and GPS world.
I did have a new RCI-2995 in 2019. The riveted SO-239 connector had to be replaced with a quality four-screw connector. I had the original dim yellow / orange meter bulbs replaced with brighter bulbs and had an on /off toggle switch for the internal amp installed. Sure enough, just one time when I decided to talk skip, I had forgotten to turn the switch off and I fed the external (driver) amp with a "bunch" of power. I damaged the radio and the driver amp. I had the radio restored back to the original configuration and sold it to a friend who knew the history of the radio. That was two years ago, and the radio continues to work great.
From that day on, I have one designated radio with a low dead-key, connected to a two-pill driver driving a ten-pill amp for skip.

Here is the thread about the 86v, the same mods should work on the 2547. The audio mic gain mod is great with the Astatic 636. The modulation limiter mod gets it loud without being scratchy. The L8 receive adjustment I do to all my radios.

About 3 years ago I bought a brand new Galaxy Base Station from Bob's CB Shop in PA because I was tired of dealing with 2 old Uniden Washington radios I had bought from eBay and Graig's List. Just more problem's dealing with old stuff when I just wanted to talk some skip. I didn't have Bob really mod the radio just unlock the clairifier and adjust it to work with my Palomar 300 A. Well needless to say at the time skip wasn't rolling very often and got tired of trying it out and wasn't impressed with it so I sort of set it aside and experimented with other radios. Now skip is on everyday I decided last night to hook it up again and give it a whirl. I talked to a guy in Texas this morning on it and was less than thrilled with the reports I received back. Now it made me start thinking about sending it back to Bob's for a full blown upgrade with receive, audio, and transmit plus adding extra channels. I'm thinking it is already paid for so it would be a investment in a new radio. Anybody out there know what all can be done with this radio?
Probably couldn't add Weather & FM but I'd settle for the rest.
Here is a nice review of this radio from cb radio magazine.

I don't think you need a "full blown upgrade" as you put it. Extra channels would be nice and the unlocked clarifier is also a handy thing to have. A nice desk mic could be all the wake up you need in the audio department. Other then a correct receive alignment I don't know if a fancy receive mod is worth the money either. In the end it's your call.

Thanks for the info also. Your never to old to learn. And to everyone I do have a Turner Super Side Kick desk mic & a Astatic AST878DM Desk mic But I also have a Pet Peeve about using 9 Volt batteries. I have had 9 volts let me down while traveling.

Incoming Region Produces X3 Solar Flare
    May 15, 2024 @ 14:55 UTC
Another major solar flare, but this time from an active region just beginning to turn into view off the east limb. It is possible that the group responsible is old AR 3654 from the previous rotation. The latest flare, an X2.99 event just peaked at 14:38 UTC (May 15). Stay tuned
