So I just picked up a Galaxy dx 77 hml at my local flea market for 25 bucks anyone have any info in this particular unit. I already been told by a friend that it will drift so looking for power info as well as how to keep the unit from drifting when being used in a vehicle.

    Thanks in advance

The 77 is a great old school dual final radio. Expect 25-30 honest watts. It's a Galaxy, it's gonna drift on SSB there is no special mod to fix that. If it's clean and it works enjoy it.

    First guess would be 1993.

The MC145106 PLL chip usually has a four-digit date code on it. Two digits for the year, followed by two digits for the week, 01 to 52. Radio usually won't be newer than that date unless the factory-original chip has been replaced.

Figured I'd give you guys an update.

I purchased the galaxy 77 and it wouldn't transmit. After exhausting my small amount of knowledge I took it to a not so local cb shop (the owner actually owns a 77 his self) found out it had a dirty modulation mod and that the echo board was fried as well as the internal speaker was removed. Got everything fixed up and now its 1 watt on low and medium of dead key 3 watts on high and swinging 55 honest watts on all three settings. The shop owner showed me both the dead key and swing on a bird meter I was impressed.

Next I had my cobra 29 ltd classic looked at as I purchased a Rainmaker mosfet upgrade for it. Found out I accidentally skipped a step on installing the kit, the shop took care of this for me and said he was very impressed with my home done peak and tune said it looked like a tech had done the work and not some guy at home.

55 PEP on a Galaxy 77?????????????. It must have some crazy mod to be showing that. I doubt it is clean also. Sorry to sound negative but I have only seen that on mosfet radios with the limiter out.

I asked my wife she said I was wrong that it was 50 not 55. I apologize I have been working on my truck as well.
Based on what the tech told me this radio was originally a single final converted to dual finales and mosfets have been upgraded. Echo board has been disconnected and mic wired directly to the board. I'm trying to remember everything. I may try to add pics later today

A Galaxy 77 was the first radio in that series with dual finals as factory, then the 88 and 99. The 33,44,55,66,73 were single finals.

I had one, bought it new. It had dual 2312’s in it. It’d do 50-55 peak but that was with some clipping, dipping and tripping. It sounded good though, everybody wanted it and eventually I ended up selling it like an idiot.

Why in the flip would someone remove the echo board? It’s not like you can’t get a replacement.

Normal for them to have between 35-40w PEP. Seen one or two radios do 45w. Never anything close to 50w. Never. They use dual 2sc1969 final amp transistors, and they aren't capable of those numbers. I'd make sure this 'tech' you brought it to didn't disable the 54mhz filter. In which case, it won't have a clean output. Just saying . . .

Well I got one that was built special then cause I’m telling you it had 2312’s in it. I ordered it brand new, came from H&Y back in the day. And we could argue or discuss the power levels all day and half the night, we all know the variables and “reasons” for such readings. Please take note that I said “clipped, dipped, tripped”.

I don’t have it any more, take note where I said I sold it. And back then I didn’t have a spectrum analyzer but I’m sure the signal was less than perfect. But... I know I was heard all over the county and almost everyone I worked with begged me to sell them that radio. So it must not have sounded too bad. Just sayin’

He is for President but not Galaxy. Haha, I bet he’d flip his wig, he doesn’t seem to favor the black box radios.

That 50 watts on Cmessina’s radio and the 50-55 I saw on mine is most likely 2nd harmonics. Yes, that’s a terrible dirty thing and it’s not real power and it’s heat and distortion and so on. Tune your radio to the way you like it, if you’re happy with it, forget what everybody else says and thinks. This hobby is like everything, once you stop trying to satisfy yourself but everyone else then it’s no fun anymore.

If someone says it sounds good and you’re happy with it, awesome, even if the waveform looks like an entire Union Pacific rail yard.

Yes it is incorrect and will shorten the life of parts but who cares? They make parts every day and it’s what keeps repair guys going.

My first car was a 1966 Mustang when I was 16, it’s sitting in my yard today and I’m 45. When I got it I started restoring it and then there were things I wanted to change that wasn’t “correct”. I took that car to many shows, had piles of trophies for it but kept hearing how this or that part wasn’t “correct”. I got points taken off cause I had an Alpine pullout in the dash. At some point I realized that I got that car for me, not for those other people. And I realized the only person I need to satisfy was me, not everyone else. And that point I did just that and I did that car to suit me and I was much happier. I also stopped showing it because I was sick of hearing that my radio wasn’t correct or my air cleaner wasn’t correct or my wheel choice.

    It’s your radio, enjoy it.
