And I don't have the cash right now but after the new year Most likely I will. May be time to move the 979 into the mobil and get something for the base fo 10-11 meters. Most of the new Radios in the 300.00 us price range are not bad radios, Not you Kenwood,Icom, Or Yaesu. But for what they are for 300.00 The Lincoln II or the Optmia MK3 might be in the forcast.

If you're wanting to run a SSB in a mobile setting I suggest a CPU processor frequency controlled stable SSB radio. I still use my CRE-8900 in my mobile. No problems whatsoever with frequency drift.

optima sounds good

I sold my optima mk3. Had it for about 6-8 months. Loved it. I used to have the cre8900 and that was a great rig as well but it's not very user friendly. Hated entering the menu just to turn the mic gain down, then up, then crash. I live the Lincoln 2. Though the stock mic is fantastic, I just wired up a CR577 and it is absolutely phenomenal. When I finished, I realized I could have wired the cr577 direct instead if using a 9v battery as the radio has a 9 volt source. Arg

Anyway, that Lincoln really is fantastic. By the way, the cre8900 mic works very well on the Lincoln 2. It is a pin for pin match. The 577 just sounds so nice and clear, loud....love it.

Don't for get about old reliable 2950DX might not be the best but does the job very well. I will say I am an Optima fan also

I do like the 2950 as well and have had my share of the older ones, haven't played with a new one. The optima mk3 is just an easy to use radio that gets the job done and with the addition of the icom hm-36 ham mic, gets great reports from everyone that I talk to. Good little radios for the money IMO. Optima fan boy I guess I have become lol. The magnum 257hp is still right there with it, but the optima is just built better IMO and that is coming from a guy that owns 3 257hp's lol. I can't bring myself to take the optima out of the mobile as it just works well there.

2950dx!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have had one a few years ago prior to my Optima. It was ok for what it was, but not even in the same league as the Optima. For me the ability to flip around on different frequencies was important. I wanted 10 to 12 metre ability in a small package.
I think Ranger needs to re-do the 2950 to catch up to the abilities of newer radios like the Optima.
