There are several different mods to extend the transmit and receive of this radio; the one you use will depend on the region your radio is designed for.

TX Modification

All region TX mods require you to remove the bottom cover and remove diodes D312 and D310. After modification, TX range is:
137.000 - 174.000 Mhz
400.000 - 470.000 Mhz

RX Modification

For the Americas version of the radio, no mods are necessary for complete RX coverage.

European radios require removal of D316 and then the key sequence; Asian radios only require the key sequence. The key sequence is as follows:

1. Turn off the radio
2. Left AF VR set to 9:00 o’clock, and Left SQL VR set to counter clockwise.
3. Right AF VR set to 9:00 o’clock, and Right SQL VR set to 12:00 o’clock
4. Turn on the radio by pushing “POWER” key, during touch “HOME”

After the RX expansion is performed, frequency range is:
118.000 – 136.995MHz (AM)
137.000 – 174.000MHz (FM)
375.000 – 550.000MHz (FM)

Here are the pictures of the modification locations:

Thank you for posting this info. Does the radio transmit full power on the expanded frequencies? I'm thinking about replacing my stand-alone mobile GMRS radio with the 5100 so I can use it for 70cm, 2m, and GMRS.

Hi. Trying to do the MARS upgrade on a ID-5100D (Asia version), but no luck, Also tried the x-band repeater enable.

Now I have on Diode left in the radio, right "row" number 3, one down and the other side of th D310. D310 is not there, D316 and D312 is removed.

Also tried the the key sequence, and also did a full reset of the radio (from the menu).

Any idea about the last diode? Can I remove this too? I would really like to have the mars and x-band to work.

Asian version is different and not unlockable.

Hi Mike.
It only answer one part of my question. I also see it a bit strange it can't be modified, as long as I can update it with a "US" firmware. The Diode in question is D322 installed in this radio. Is this installed in any E or A version?

I would understood your statement if it was a ID-5100 (without the D) as an Asia version, this seems to be a beginners/tech lic version with low power. The D version has all same spec as both E and A version.
