Improving AM audio on the FT-991

1. Power off the FT-991 and connect a dummy load to the HF antenna port
2. Press the [A/B]+[A=B]+[FAST] buttons together and hold them, then press POWER to enter SERVICE MODE
Fiddle with anything other than the following steps at your own risk. Standard disclaimer applies: If you break it, YOU broke it!
3. Rotate the [MULTI] knob clockwise until option 18-02 (AM carrier level) is displayed
4. Write down the original/current value of (AM carrier level) in your owner's manual. (Usually "55")
5. Change the frequency to 14.200MHz by rotating the Main Dial
6. Press the PTT button, note S-meter reading. Release PTT button.
7. Using the [CLAR/VFO-B] knob, reduce the (AM carrier level) by about 15 units by rotating the knob counterclockwise.
8. Press the PTT button, note S-meter reading. Release PTT button.
9. Press and HOLD the [MENU/SETUP] button **for one second** to save the new service menu values.
10. Power OFF the FT-991 and then Power ON the FT-991
11. Record the NEW (AM carrier level) in your owner's manual. (about "40")
12. Enjoy your smooth sounding AM!
