Has anyone used an interface-rig to computer to talk voice through sound card and eq software ? I heard this was possible through RIGblaster.

Sonwatcher...yes I made one for my Icom 746 Pro. It's pretty easy and you don't have to pay for something like Rigblaster. What radio are you hooking up?

On my radio, it has a Accessory plug in the back with 8 pins. One pin is line audio out, audio in, etc. Basically you just have to go from audio out&in to sound card in&out. I used a 2 1 isolation transformers in the middle from RatShack to get rid of the ground loop. Let us know what rig you're trying to interface, and I can give you a little more info....

Thanks Tim,

I want to interface my Yaesu 757GX. I have heard that a transformer off a modem works well. I have a Soundblaster 5.1 card. Thanks for your help !

Does that radio have an ACC1 plug on the back? If not, does it have a line out and line in or mic in plug on the back?

Tim,

It has a 3pin molex connector for the CAT system. It also has an AF out and RF out. Also has a patch/afsk jack that will send signal to the audio amp for a phone patch or signal generator.

OK, look in your owner's manual. That molex connector is probably the one. One pin is probably audio out, one is probably audio in, and one is probably ground. You can buy those connectors. I bought a mono cable from the store with the 1/4 phone jacks already connected. Then I cut it in 1/2 so I had two cables...one for audio in and one for audio out for the sound card. Then I soldered the other side to the Molex connector. If you get a ground hum, then cut the cables and put the 1-1 isolation transformer inline. They're cheap...you can get them at radio shack for about $2, I think. I'm not sure what's in the modem...probably is the same thing. You'd have to measure the voltage on each side of the transformer to make sure it's 1-1.

You could always just use the AF out jack to the sound card, too....

Tim,

What would the AF jack activate. Would that be my audio into the soundcard ? Or would it relay in and out ? If it is just audio out then I guess I will have to find the audio in to get the audio from the computer. I guess this would come from the Molex plug.

To get audio into that rig for transmitting use the FSK input jack. That accepts regular audio and routes it directly to the modulator stage.Just take sound card out and hook it up to the FSK input jack on the radio. You may have to adjust sound card output levels for proper audio drive levels.

Heheh....not really. The only thing to remember is that your mic is still probably hot, so you may want to unplug it when using the computer for TX.

What I did with the mic works pretty neat. I have a MD-1. I disconnected the mic from the mic base and left the base connected to the radio. I use the PTT on the mic base to Tx the computer mic.

Update

While tinkering with this I found I had a problem with ground-loop. I bought a ground-loop isolator from RS and everything is clear. It is supposed to work for vehicle noise also. The part # is 270-054.
