After viewing many of Less' videos, on youtube, that show outrageous PEP watts from his radio peak mods, it's obvious to tell that he has tweaked his Bird meter "add-on PEP-Multiplier Board" to show what he wants .... not what is true.
The "add-on PEP-Multiplier board" has to be adjusted for the "proper setting" for PEP, OR "whatever you want" as stated on the instructions. These settings are done without a SLUG in the Bird 43 meter. The "add-on PEP-Multiplier board" has two switches; a switch for PEP (on or off), and three-way-switch with center being Normal and UP being X2 or Down being X5 (the multiplier factors). There is a small "set-up Push Button" and five trimmer pots on the add-on-board, with all switch positions having a trim pot for setting up the proper outputs. A video with set up instructions can be found on youtube.
Once you have used it and set it up properly, it's easy to see that others have tweaked for the eye candy affect ............ to show more than what is real. Many argue that PEP is just "fake watts", but the FCC only goes by the PEP wattage reading for legal limit output.
Watch BBI's latest video with the (4 each) "811a vs 572b" tubes.
He has three Bird meters set up, on your left is SWR Reflect, the one in the middle is 1000w Average, and the one to your right is 1000w PEP.
His first test is with the 811a tubes, take note of the (low) 400w Average reading compared to the 700w (high) PEP readings for the 811a tubes. With the 572b tubes the Average wattage was 425w and the PEP wattage was 700w almost the same as the 811a tubes, but that the 572b tube would last longer. He goes on to state this amp is a 700w to 800w amplifier all day and sold as that. (but it only does to 400w Average.)
Whether you are, plan to become an Amateur Radio Operator, or not .................
What will your Average reading watt meter read?..... Not having a PEP meter...... which would you rather see and which do you believe? ...... Would you try to push the Average power to get the advertised (PEP) wattage out of it? ...... Or be happy with the PEP reading?
My 2¢..........
Like him or hate him .... he will be remembered.
Lester had a good run, was in it for a very long time, and did a lot of good to the hobby at one time with many good mods .......... but his old age has caught up to him, he knows it's just a matter of time ...... then it will all go away.
