Radio was set up by DTB, Tune,Align, open Clarifier. I bought the digital frequency counter FC347 because I wanted to see how badly the radio is drifting, and it turns out the radio will olny drift until it warms up and less than a couple of minutes. Talking on the radio does not seem to affect the radio on Am or SSB. The most I have seen it drift is one digil low when the radio is turned on and then right on the money after warm up.The frequency counter on the low or Dim setting matches the radio color and brightness setting I have it set to. The Star light face plate on this radio makes it a Gem. The radio does not have Echo built in but in but trying every Mic in the collection a $19.95 Superstar DM-452 sounds the best with the echo on or slider off completely.
For the price of the radio, I can't think of a Radio I would want to have more than this one. The DX-949 and DX-959 were also considered. This is the First radio with starlight feature and I am glad I chose the 979.

Galaxys get a bad reputation from ppl that dont get their radios tuned, or learn how to themselfs. Ppl get brainwashed from others that say it over and over. Next time just get the 959, FC comes free, lol. I like a little echo myself, i install one in my radios that dont come stock.

Sweet ain't it! I was looking at the 979 before I bought my 959.
I use a RF Limited 2018 Xtreme echo mic. The only thing louder than it is a Road Devil. I have the Road Devil on my CRE-8900.
I'm been thinking about getting a quality echo board to install in my DX-959 but don't know yet what's in the market. My 959 doesn't need a power mic but I'd like some echo please!
Note:After several months of use on my 2018,the audio wire in the mic cord has a break in it from picking the mic up while driving and placing it back. It can benefit from a quality mic cord. Just so happens that I have one ready to go on it that I bought from GiJoes Electronics.

imho that 2018 has thebest sounding echeo. even better than any addon board.
if your radio dont need a power mic turn on the n/c feature then you,ll have a noise
canselling mic with great echeo.i myself dont use echeo anymore. but i do a few
power mics left with that feature i kept the 2018 cause of its noise canselling feature

Those echo mics feel very cheap in your hand, square, boxy and ugly. Put the Turbo-2 in it, then use a D104. I hear those Xtreme 2018's everyday, not bad sounding, they do repeat forever but thats annoying. A M6B will beat a Road Devil anyday, plus you dont have to eat it and your locals wont hear ya lip-smacking (i hate that) LOL

Not if you use the double talker and keep the echo volume way down.
I keep mine on double talker, echo volume 2 1/2, echo at 2,noise reduction off. The noise reduction feature cuts the audio in half.the two pot adjustments turned to the max.
As far as lip smacking goes, please finish eating whatever it is,trays in the stowed position, seatbelt buckled and extinguish cigarettes before takeoff!

P.S. if some if us would only hear a recording of ourselves talk, that might be incentive to talk better.
