Had the tire been dropped on the other side the lock ring would have launched upward probably decapitating him. He's lucky he got hit by the tire.
It still could have killed him. Those damned old split rim assemblies are deadly. My father had an old truck he used to haul wood out with. One day when I was kid we were passing where I live now with two cords of green hardwood on and there was a loud BOOM! I looked sideways just in time to see twigs and leaves falling about 100 feet away. The rim separated and the ring shot thru the tree branches at about WARP 8 speed. We kept our fingers crossed for the next mile home hopping the inside dual would hold up. It did.Years later after I built a house on this spot I found the ring down over the riverbank about 150 feet from the road. The oak trees slowed it down I guess.
taking a slower, closer look, I'm thinking he was hit in the chest with the tire, and his face/head got the rim.
All the other guys scattered LOL. Man he did get it. Looked like his face and chest took the blast and tire. Wonder if he can still hear or if his ears are still ringing. Feel sorry for the guy but I gotta laugh at the other 3 dudes, the one closest walks away and the others ducked and ran LOL. Good stuff space cowboy!!!
