RCI-2970N2 won't unkey

Well, I called John yesterday at Galaxy. And he had no clue. About the board and were the part went. Told me he could not see why two diodes forget the numbers he used. Could not do the same thing as the MA28T(n) Got the number to Ranger supply going to call later on today. Emailed twice for the part and have got no were.:(

This is not been my day when it comes to HF gear. Here is a copy of the Email I received back from radio shop supply concerning the part I need to repair my RCI-2970N2 So anyone who has one should beware of this. Don't know what I am going to do now.

The manufacturer has discontinued this part and it is no longer available and there is no known replacement that is a drop in. Our service department does repair on these units and has been modifying the circuit for over 3 years since this is a very common failure part that affects Q47 and Q49 in the TX/RX circuit. If you decide you would like to send the radio in for repair let us know.

those rats!
J/K that is a good quality shop.

they are probably doing something like the galaxy people suggested to you.

any luck figuring out what happened with the amp?
loud bangs usually come from blown electrolytic capacitors, but that would be easy to see, as there would be shrapnel all over the place and a particular smell.

don't ask me how i know LOL.

I read your email, Matt, After looking around again I found a bad part. I don't know how it would have made that kind of sound. What looks like a resistor on the back side behind the two tubes is fried. There is a white wire running from the PB-800 POWER SUPPLY board over to the resistor from there over to a black choke I guess is what it is then to a coil over to the Parasitic resistors which go to the filaments on the 3-500ZB tubes. The power board looks fine?

cbkidd1,

I think i have found a substitute part for your RCI 2970.

They may be available from others, but here is an ebay auction where you can get some pretty cheap.
you will have to wait a while to get them though!

https://www.ebay.com/itm/5PCS-X-MA3...357873?hash=item4d67681bb1:g:sYcAAOSw~vpaCL85

this looks to be the next generation of the MA28 series.

if someone sees a reason why this part would not work, please let me know!

Well, I fixed the 2970n2. Thank you for your help. All I need now is a way to have it key the lk500ZB amp. After I get the lk500 fixed.

Here's how we do it.

http://www.nomadradio.com/OldNomadWebPages/KBinstall/index.htm

The web page is ancient, and I'm not sure there's room for it in a 2970 radio. The amplifier takes up nearly all the spare volume inside the cabinet.

Never did get this toy to market, but a batch of fifty is in the works. Putting it on Ebay will either go well, or turn into a support nightmare.

Time will tell.

Great Ideal! Good for base radios, Like you said don't think there is much room inside for mind to use one.

I put the old MA28T back in. It is not as bad as I had thought to solder in or remove the little tiny SMT parts. Still, have 5 new MA28T'S on the way that I don't need now o well. I forgot to mention after replacing the new CPU. When I turn the radio on I have good vol than for whatever reason the received sound coming out of the speaker start to fade? So I need to turn the vol all the way up to hear it? Also, I noticed upper and lower SSB receive signal fades along with the vol? I have no trouble with am receive. Maybe Nomad or someone knows why?? Never had that happen on any radio before. When I hooked it up to the lk500 to key have caused that to happen?
