I’ve used the Weller wes51 for about 10 years. This is my second and it’s time to replace it. I’d like to upgrade. I’ve replaced the iron a a few times and many tips. They don’t last.

Recommendations for the best units under $300, please.

Mostly through board components.

Hakko FX888D is certainly the iron that gets the most positive comments.
I use an old Weller TC202, and recently bought a cheap Chinese Hakko 936 clone, as well as a hot air station for IC and SMD work. But if I was to buy new and had to use it everyday, I would do the Hakko . . .

I’m looking at the Hakko 951. Tips = Copper-iron chrome alloy. (?) Ive never had to know anything about tips. I’ve always just replaced my Weller tips with OEM tips and I think they’re stainless.

  • @ Hambones amps:
Does anyone know if you can replace the 2290 in a galaxy dx 93t twin turbine with a 2sc2879 red dot? If so, what would have to be tuned?
  • @ ShadowDelaware:
Hambones the entire amp section would have to be retuned, and the rf transformers re wrapped.
