rewire Motorola Professional Mic for CB use?

By the time you rewire the radio to do the RX & TX switching with a relay inside the radio and supply power from the radio, it's not worth the results. Most do not have the double pole switch shown in the schematic. You're plagued with RFI issues getting into the DC power and audio line. Look at the mic cord they use on these FM rigs. There are no shielded conductors at all. They are not needed with a FM transmitter because frequency modulation does not cause RF feedback on audio lines. AM and SSB are totaly different. Plus when you add a relay to electronic switching radios like a 148 it causes a loud pop in the speaker every time you unkey due to switching transients caused by the faster relay. If you have the skills, your time would be better spent transplanting a more suitable mic, switch and cord into the heavy duty Motorola case.

I've got a couple of mics...an older one HMN3596A and the newer style AARMN4025C.

@SHockwave. The only reason the CB is in the Jeep is because it's a requirement for many clubs to have one for communications. Most of the guys I wheel with have their Ham ticket and we use 2m rigs most of the time for both more range and clarity. I'm going to use the cord from the crappy CB mic and wire that into the Motorola Mic housing so it will have a bit of shielding from that. I've added a diode to relays to prevent that crash back in other speaker type circuits with good results.

It's kinda sad when you look at it really....for a Cobra 29 LTD and antenna your looking at spending around 2-300 in my area for a 40 channel AM radio that on a good day STOCK is going to get you about 5 miles with less than perfect audio. Now take that same 2-300 bucks and buy an entry level 2m rig and antenna and you can reach out 20 miles+ with no amp or repeater with clear no static audio. I know some people still have a major passion for them but I'd rather use a 2m or HF rig.
