The most-common roger-beep add-on board is the "new beep". Some of them have that printed on them, some do not. Gotta figure the design got copied a lot.

Customers ask to have the beep tone changed to a bump or fart. No big deal, the pitch is set by a parallel pair of disc caps, marked C3 and C4 on this one, at the bottom edge of the board in this pic.

A 0.1uf cap added in parallel to them will drop the pitch of the beep to a proper "bump".

While we're on the subject, this one was in a Cobra 2000GTL. A 4-pin socket had been installed in place of the factory 5-pin socket. The 5-pin socket has two separate ground wires. One on pin 2 for the audio ground only, and one on pin 4 to handle the transmit/receive switching only. Whoever changed it just soldered both ground wires to pin 1 of the new socket. The relay in the New Beep provides a way to separate the ground circuits and reduce the risk of feedback you get from connecting them to each other.

First the 'common' pin of the relay gets its foil trace cut, to isolate that pin of the relay.

The violet wire was removed from pin 4 of the 5-pin socket. Just above where it's soldered the foil trace has been severed. And yeah, the red transmit wire has been soldered to the foil side, and not to the "tx" pin on the top side of the board. This way the relay alone connects the pin 4 wire to the radio's transmit/receive switching and keeps it separate from the audio ground on the pin 2 wire.

If the radio has a roger beep in it already this is cheaper than what I charge for a 4-pin conversion socket module.

Shoulda included the hack to shut off the beep delay. The instructions tell you to switch off the audio wire. This gets you a "roger pause" and delays the radio unkeying whether the switch is on or off. But this customer doesn't care to turn off the beep, so there's no switch on this radio. To each his own.

I refer those annoying beeps as "Tinkerbells"

Also been known as "good buddy beeps" with truck drivers who also ran those annoying beeps.

Please discourage people from using them.
