I passed both my tech and general exams over the weekend and am not anxiously awaiting the chance to send the government my money so I can get my call sign.

To keep myself from refreshing the page too much, I’m starting to look at gear. I have a cheap HT that I’ve been using to listen to the local repeater, but now that I’ve got privileges I am interested in doing HF stuff (mostly SSB voice and maybe some CW once I actually get proficient at it). I live in a suburban/semi-rural apartment without a lot of space for a huge amount of gear.

I have soft budget of 1500 USD (with hard upper limit of 2k) which ideally needs to cover everything to get going. Apart from the radio itself, an antenna of some sort, a power supply, and coax to connect it all, I’m not entirely sure what I need right out of the gate and if 1500 is even a reasonable budget for what I’m looking to do. I am looking to buy new for my first one since I don’t have the knowledge or skills to do any repairs or tinkering inside of a used unit. Any suggestions/advice?

Yaesu FT-710...

This is just example of good used/from dealer tuner.

Then down to the local big box hardware and buy whole bunch of GOOD paracord rope...or spring for the good Dacron ...

Just showing you my suggestions...those are Real time #'s...IMHO stay away from the China knock-offs for less...not a good choice for a first home station IMHO...
All the Best

Congrats and welcome to Amateur Radio!
As usual I agree with Gary, put your money into a good rig and power supply, they're the foundation of your station. Homebrewing wire antennas is cheap, easy and a great way to learn. I started out as a Tech working 10m from a condo balcony with a wire CFHW Inverted V. After passing the General exam I just cut new wires for the 20, 17, 15 and 12m bands. Swapped out wires for whichever band was open each day. Not ideal but got me on the air and working DX thousands of miles away.

Good luck and 7 3

Dentron MT-2000 Tuner/fs What the title says.I have a Dentron MT-2000 Tuner. Those that know of this tuner will call it Bulletproof. It is a tough tuner. Look at rifpix, eham reviews. The case could use a paint job.Not that bad, But .front is nice. Works flawlessly.Asking $150.00 plus some help on the shipping.I will get pictures asap and can send them via cell phone now if needed. My card reader is not operating so cant post.73 john
