I like talking skip, mostly side band- lsb 38 seems to be where everyone wants to be, I run a stock radio 4/12 watts, a 980. I get out well but those cb's with the big amps make it hard. Why don't people use other channels. I have had luck calling on say 30, or 36. I am suggesting people with stock gear call out on 30. I am able to get out good to other stock radios, I don't really want to buy an amp, I enjoy what I have. So if your on the side band talking skip, I will be shouting out on lsb 30, I am """ North 7""""" do say hello!! Do encourage others to do this. I would like to see a bunch of us who enjoy the challenge of stock radio. No problem with people and there amps, there is room for all. I do think it is time for us low what stock people to carve out our own place on the dial. Anyone else with me? Thoughts appreciated.

16 lsb is the channel that a few use with their vintage 23 channel radios,,, it is fun when the skip cycle is in but challenging when conditions not good,,,,,

I can't join you on SSB on channel 30. Channel 30 is THE most used AM channel where I live. Lots of locals have been AM'ing there for years. I would be ran out of the county for SSB on 30.

I, like you, hear most DX on 38. There is less skip traffic on 16, 36, 37, 39, or 40. Why not try one of those?

Oh yeh, welcome to the forum! (y):)

I think that is the issue, different everywhere. Am here is 20, and of course 6 which is past nuts. Up here there is nobody on cb at all, a few local truckers on 20,

Deserves to said again: it isn't so much the radio that helps you talk skip. Your radio is fine. It is the ANTENNA that does all the heavy lifting.
I have talked half way around the globe during the last solar cycle with a standard SSB radio and a 4 element Yagi beam antenna. Made all of the difference . . .

Yes...ANTENNA. Years ago I had a Moon Raker IV and it made lots of difference.

These days my A99 and horizontal dipole just struggle along to make it...with a little assistance of course.

A couple of years ago, me and a few others were pushing an effort to "reclaim" LSB 16. The logic was two fold. First, LSB38 is just too crowded. Second, some folks are still operating on old 23 channel rigs. It didn't catch on then, but maybe the time has come to try again.

My suggestion would be to promote a DX week-end encouraging folks to light up the frequencies you want to promote. Get WWDX formally involved. I think Binrat is the one who coordinates the DX week-ends.

Timing is important. Weather needs to cooperate. Also, Mothers Day week-end would NOT be a wise choice, but maybe the following week-end or even Memorial Day week-end.

    Food for thought.

Great ideas guys ,well, pass around 16 that sounds like it would work for everyone, I will call it every time I have skip conditions for sure. Pass the word. I run a full wave vertical quad loop antenna which I really, really like. I have had a moxon, a jpole, and some dipoles, and a 5/8, no beams so far, but the loop has been the best of this lot for me, a beam would be a gainer for sure and maybe in my future. May do a v beam, texas tornado some time, love that old design, I would just line her up south and leave her put for skippin. That tornado is an old wire gain antenna 300 feet of wire on each side of a v, for 10 db gain. Its on the bucket list.

Conditions can put you in the drivers seat if you are lucky enough.
Somewhere about 1996 I was in a big truck in New Mexico on 38 LSB and I had southern CA LOCKED DOWN with just my grant and a 5' firestick. I must have talked with that guy in San Diego for 30+ minutes before I just got out of the way. (I know...channel hog)

Generally speaking 36-40 are considered the SSB channels. There are many times where just a barefoot radio can and does talk skip just fine. It's really up to mother nature to control skip, not an amplifier. The main problem is when the DX is rolling there are so many people trying on 38 it's tough.

I have one of those Cherokee AH100 walkie talkies with SSB. Radio Shack used to make a fantastic center-loaded, 4' telescoping walkie talkie antenna for the TRC 226 line of walkie talkies. Years ago, I got my hands on as many of those radios and antennas as I could. With a TNC/BNC adapter, I hook the Radio Shack antenna to my Cherokee AH100 and walk from one side of a sand bar to the other while talking skip the whole time on 6 watts PEP. People think I'm pulling their leg when I tell them what I am running. I'm not.

I do have a Shakespeare "Salty Dog" marine CB antenna on the boat. It outperforms the Radio Shack walkie talkie antenna, but not by much.

I've taken a tripod mount, connected a 102" stainless steel whip to it and run a 105" piece of wire for a counterpoise. Mounted on the deck of 19' open fisherman, it got some interesting looks from the few passers by that were out there. The marine patrol guys trolling by (on a boat) finally decided to pull up and ask what I was doing.

I've had some fun shooting skip barefoot down here.

I’d tell those marine patrol guys that I needed a better antenna to communicate. The last few pickup trucks missed my weak signal and were forced to return back without any rum. Timing is everything...
