Can you use echo&reverb on 38 lsb? Use cb lingo ssb on the same channel? Actually take turns while talking on ssb? I suspect that some won't answer me for these reasons(voilations) or I ain't getting out on skip. Yesterday there was skip from Florida to Tennesse and I could,kt seem to make a contact(to far over my head?). I live in S.C. Any body care to comment?

can you use that stuff on sideband? sure you CAN, youll just be seen as a colossal douche for doing it.

Sometimes the conditions are in your favor and sometimes they arent as far as contacts go

lend a helping hand

This is the first time that I'm actually using ssb. I'm basically ignorant about how to use ssb other than calling out cq cq cq. But is that reserved for the ham bands? :pop:

Basically i used to make contacts in 1 of 2 ways

1) listen for the loudest signal coming thru and call back to them.......75% of the time they would call back to me.

2) do my call first and see who would come back to me. My call was "Cq Cq CqDX skywriter 788 mile high city, denver colorado calling cqdx and standing by" Would be long enough for them to tune me in and call back.

Thats about it really.

Decent guide i found too is Idiot's guide to shooting skip - CB radio 11 Meters Skip Conditions

conditions have not been great for about the last week or so,, i think someone posted there is going to be an upward peak next weekend 15th-16th,, when conditions are good someone will reply to you. when conditions are bad and your are still hearing skip, probly lots of them are running extra power. it takes better conditions to get out with just a radio, im just running a radio with no amp and a 102" whip and when conditions are good there is no problem talking all over north america on ssb

also make sure your radio is on freq. if not someone else will have to tune to your radio to even hear you,, my first radio i tried was off freq on ssb and i didnt know till 1 guy did come back to me and told me he had his clarifier adjusted all the way just to make out my voice.

Well,I am running barefoot on my 959 with the ssb alc adjusted to the 7:30 position per Galaxy Tech's advise and the modulation cranked up all the way on the inside and using a 2018 Xtreme turbo echo mic in a mobile setup with a K40 base loaded antenna. I have yet to get the radio aligned and clarifier opened up. I can either send it to Galaxy and let them do a free alignment or DTB or 8541. DTB has already given me a price list. I think a base station setup would help a whole lot. I have a 102" stainless whip on top of a homemade 37 foot tower that I'm using twin stack tv antennas on. Thanks for the info!:pop:

that might be your problem,, the first radio i tried was a 959 that had the power and mod turned up,, i guess these radios are know for ssb being off freq after they are turned up.. i would bet your not transmitting on freq.

yep

I agree. I'm listening on 38lsb and there some guy talking about being on frequency and poking a little fun on air. I would like to send it to Galaxy but I want to doe the clarifier mod install a viagra board,do a receive upgrade and this might present a problem with Galaxy. :pop:

Just key up and say "CQ DX station give your dx # calling station their DX #s....and your in like flynn.:D

Drop the AM crap like using handles, echo, roger beeps, and the silly AM'er talk ( 11111111 auuudiooo!) and you will be respected on SSB..

Thanks! The ssb police are on 38lsb right now. "Your off frequency". Etc..(y)

I hate that. I simply tell them to tune to me. If they dont like that they can piss off.. On HF SSB on the HF bands no one is EXACTLY on freq... Some ops use like 3.845.50 or whatever to keep away from other QSOs.

One of the challenges you face making contacts on CB is this. On the ham bands when you find a frequency you listen first. If there are two other hams having a conversation you move along to find a an open frequency or a ham calling CQ. The general rule on CB is to find the most crowded channel you possibly can and just start shouting out to skip land. How can you possibly be dissapointed if can't make a contact in that mess?

Ham radio is the couple in the corner having a nice quiet conversation. Sometimes a drunk or other rude individual with poor operating skills comes to interrupt but thats pretty rare.

CB is a shouting match in a crowded stadium with everyone screaming at once. Get enough people on the same channel and it becomes an unintelligible S9+ squealing ball of hetrodyne.

Which do you prefer?

Unlock the clarifier and get an external counter to get that last digit. Keep chasing the freq. drift until it warms up and you should be fine. I got tired of jacking the clarifier and got a Uniden 980 ran through a 100w. Decent cheap combination that's solid on SSB.
