ssb etique on 11 meters

you will make many more contacts if your on freq and the other guy doesnt have to mess around to hear you. uniden 980ssb is a great little radio for $139especially now that the beep mod is out!,, the anytone at-5555 for $198 is another great ssb radio, it even has a menu so you can tune am,usb, lsb right from the menu if needed

Yea! Your right! It drfts while warming up. I have to get it aligned. Here's a neat sixth digit mod on YouTube. Enjoy! Galaxy DX959 5 Digit Frequency Counter Mod That will let you get the 6th Digit - YouTube or Galaxy DX959 5 Digit Frequency Counter Mod That will let you get the 6th Digit - YouTube :pop:

Better get used to the idea that it will always drift some - even after alignment. That is not a cure for the drift issue in this radio; there is no cure. Just let it warm up and after 20 min it is going to be as stable as it is capable of by design.

The sixth digit mod really isn't worth it - IMO. You are better off just get your radio aligned and get used to the way SSB works. Once your clarifier has been unlocked and the radio aligned, then use your ear and the clarifier knob tuned to get the received voice as natural sounding to your ear as possible. If your radio is off freq; then others will tell you that if you are way off. Typical for a radio that hasn't seen an alignment yet.

Echo on SSB is useless and makes other operators think that you don't know what you are doing. Just makes it harder for them to understand you. A radio that is over-modulated on SSB isn't a great idea either. That is an AM tactic; SSBers try to keep their signal as clean and clear as possible. I recommend that you make it your goal too if you want any measure of success there.

ssb power

I'm seeing the meter swing to 12 wattsvoice/18 watts whistle and 41 watts whistle on a roadpro swr/power meter. No bird as of yet. Got the modulation pot inside the radio turned all the way up and the 2018 Xtreme mic turned all the way up too. I gotta figure out what's right on ssb. After DTB gets it in perfect working order I'll see. Any help on modulating on ssb would help. Thanks! :pop:

If that is so; then be sure NOT TO REMOVE THE AM LIMITER. It will just screw up SSB function. If DTB or any other decent radio techs get a radio in that had the AM Limiter removed; they will just put a new one in. Because they know that most CB ops don't know much about radios and how they work and do that mod because they don't know what they are doing or know any better.

Once you watch an O'scope of a radio with a limier removed; only then will you understand and appreciate why I say this . . .

limiter

The limiter is still in place. This is a stock radio keying 4 watts with the modulation cranked up. I've done my homework and yes,I read DTB's statement on limiters. I know all about splatter boxes. Back in the Eighties there were two main competitors in Charlotte and every once in a while they would have shoot outs. Happyfeet had the stronger deal. One time he used a 7000 watt linear on a set of sigma four beams. He co+channeled every channel twenty miles away. Of course his antenna sort of melted and laid down on the roof. Those were the days. He had the best sounding setup though because he worked on radios. :pop:

Thanks! The ssb police are on 38lsb right now. "Your off frequency". Etc..(y)

It's very sad... those operators that are complaining bought such cheap SSB rigs, they didn't come with a clarifier. I have more tolerance for a guy with a rig that's a little off frequency than I do for operators who constantly complain about people being off frequency, mostly because they are too lazy to tune them in.

That being said, you will be ignored if you are waaaay off frequency, or if you are using echo. I don't mind people using 10 codes on SSB, since it's not any goofier than using Q codes or saying "hi hi" out loud. Just talk like you are in a normal conversation, but please repeat your call sign and location. It seems every time I try to hear a station when they are calling CQ DX, they fade right as they give their location and call!

73 and catch you on the airwaves,

I would be VERY careful using a power mic with these Galaxy DX radios, My 979 has all the modulation it needs and more, just using the stock mic. These radio are known for many things, but being under powered and wimpy is not one of them.

The Clarifier mod on these radios is fairly easy to do (as long as you have a steady hand), and there is a good video on youtube to show you how to do it.

clarifier mod

Thanks. There's two of them. One opens the clarifier and the other one adds sixth digit capability. I may do mine and then send it to DTB to get tuned and aligned:pop:

If the limiter has been removed; then it is difficult if not impossible to run a power mic on a Galaxy. Check to see if your limiter had been removed. They are easy and cheap to replace (usually a 2SC945 - about $.05/ea) and can be found easily/plentiful in any radio that has been scrapped out for parts.

limiter

It's a new 959. I bought it off Amazon.com three months ago. The limiter is in place. I run tests with my brother who lives eight miles away. He says it's LOUD but has clear audio. I plan on sending it To DTB to get tuned and aligned along with getting the clarifier opened,a receive mod,Viagra board, and check all the solder connections. Galaxy will align it for free but I don't know if they'll go for the mods:pop:
