So in the last couple of years I've dabbled in many of the qixiang made radios that come stock with an electret mic. I've tried many types of mics and always end right back to the stock electret because it sounds best hands down.

Now, I'm getting ready to buy a 955 hpc plus but it comes with a dynamic mic.

It does have the option of using an electret mic with it but that's where I'm stumped. Who makes a good aftermarket electret mic that will pair with the 955 plus?

I'm all ears!

Lots of people like the 636. I have a 636 and Stryker SR-76NC. No clue which one is better.

955HPC+ has this setting in func menu. I tried to find a video of someone testing it but no luck, no clue if it makes any difference.

MIC: (DY / EL) You can use a dynamic or electret element microphone.
Most microphones including the stock microphone, are dynamic.

If you buy 955HPC+ this setting below will probably be first thing you want to adjust. I think Stock is set like at 3. I lower it to 1 on mine.

VOXT: (0.5 – 4.5) This feature allows you to avoid the sudden cut off
of transmission by adding a delay at the end of speaking

I appreciate it but I'm well aware of the radios functions and how it works. No 636 for me, that's going backwards in time.

The question was about which electret mic to use with it.

The 955+ can use an electret mic, and is selectable in the menu. The best mic is DIY with the element from a telephone handset.

Second choice is a Uniden BC645 for less than $20 on Amazon.
I actually own one of those that I had bought to try with the original q6 back some years.
You just reminded me that I have it so that will be the first mic to try.

That brings up another question. The 955 has a 4 pin plug and not a 6 like it's other cousins.

When it's set to el mic in the settings, does it supply voltage for an electret?

Yes, when set to electret it sends voltage on the audio wire. So for a dynamic or power mic it would be best to set it to dynamic. Although I don't think it would hurt anything if it was set wrong.

Ok I wasn't sure if the el setting sent voltage so that helps. I'll try the uniden mic and see how it does. After getting spoiled with the audio on an electret mics I'm just not pleased with a dynamic mic anymore and especially with these newer rigs. Hopefully the Stryker does well with them like it's other cousins do.

I was looking at the heil mics from another thread here but I've never played with those before.

The 636 is not an electret or condenser mic as the OP was asking about. Niether is the Stryker noise canceling mic. Between the two, I'd pick the 636, but I don't like either one. I've attached a quick audio file doing a direct audio comparison of the Ranger SRA-198, the Astatic 636, and the Turner RK56B mics. Each mic was close-talked with the lip guard against my upper lip. My sinuses are packed up a bit so the audio is a bit nasally, but you can hear the differences. You can hear that the RK56B is stronger and more defined than the other two.

As for a condenser mic recommendation, I have to agree that a DIY mic using a phone handset element is a good choice.
