"Upgrade" the final to a MOSFET. Throw a peak and tune on it and wire a D-104 to it. Oddly enough, this has been done before. My locals use to meet at the park and have keydowns on their walkie talkies. One had it peaked with a power mic and when he figured out to replace the two "dummy cells" with all Energizer batteries, the extra 3 volts gave him the lead.

I have worked Bill, Happy Hamer, half way across the US and he was using a Cherokee handheld.
