The bolts in the knobs are too long and shorting out something when you screw them in all the way. Get some shorter knobs and it will work just fine.

yes, try some shorter ones, and also check all your cables and wires and all that good stuff! I have messed with tons of radios and i remember hooking up a few and it acting like it did not want to do right and gave problems in the hook up stage, and i went on for hours messing with the radio before i found out that my coax was right up against the back of the radio and not into it, so it was giving me a signal, but my swr's and everything went crazy, i felt like a complete fool after that and now take more time doing what i do! LOL Please let us know what you find out, and we will help you with any more questions!, (lets just hope it is not a internal thing)

What shockwave said is the most likely problem and not uncommon. Tightenig of the bracket knobs can break solder joints to the regulator and audio IC both mounted to the side of the chassis. Some fresh solder on each of the pins should sure it up.

I had a similar problem with a Galaxy 44.

I added the ranger frequency counter, drilled holes in the bottom of the case because it hangs from the headliner.

When I tightened the knobs the radio got real goofy and I couldn't tx.

The supplied screws only shorted out when the knobs were very snug. If I backed the screws off the problem disappeared, however doing this was going to inevitably end up in a dropped radio.

Shorter screws solved the problem.

Just a tip that might save someone else some headaches.
