This neat little radio can be had for around $30, and I just picked up a couple to use on GMRS. If you are interested in one for GMRS, the new ones have recently been changed so that they will not go to the GMRS frequencies. There are still plenty of old ones out there, so check the specifications to make sure you know which ones you are getting. I programmed mine for GMRS and marine frequencies for when we go to the beach.

Yes, that is what I currently use.

There is a UV5R version made for GMRS. The GMRS part cant be changed, but other frequencies can be added with a small hack to the xml file.

I picked up a couple UV-82’s for GMRS and was wondering if anyone has tried the Nagoya NA-771 antennas, and if they had a noticeable improvement in the range and receive?

I have a Nagoya 717 and it’s ok. Seems like it overloads the radio and it cuts out. Probably better for open areas or signals further away. The stock antenna works better.

I have one, and the downfall is that it is a dual band antenna. It would probably work great for the ham frequencies, the stock antenna seems to transmit better. The 771 might receive better, but is clumsy because it is so long. I just stick with the factory one and daydream about putting up a repeater.

Just found a video about unlocking the new UV5R for GMRS. I don't know what happened to the video in my first post. I hope the forum upgrade didn't wipe it out, that would be disasterous for the old threads.

I didn’t know there was a way to unlock the new UV5R’s for GMRS. I have an older one so it’s all good but was hesitant about getting another. I do have two UV5X’s that work great!

You insinuate that transmitting on GMRS with a regular UV5R is against the law. What law would be broken by this action?
