It takes about a week to two weeks to know the EASY material.
A couple of friends<cb> guys took a week, just had to memorize the frequencies if I remember right.
I'm in agreement with the previous answers. It really is not difficult at all. I need a classroom environment to "make" me learn and retain the material. You may find studying on your own works for you. Definitely test online, and as suggested, once you get to a point where you pass every time, you are ready for the real deal. A couple of weeks studying for Tech did it for me, and about a month of studying for General. I can say that it's been great since I passed... lots of cool people on the air to talk to, and there is always a band that has conditions to play on. Do it! You won't regret it.
