What a bummer. That sucks.Yes, those models. I had one go bad in the box.

Yes, for a standard 40 channel radio they did what they were meant to do and if not for the display were decent.Except, that as a CB radio, it isn't bad.
I run a Radenso Pro in one car, bought it a while back (2014), and a R4 (2023) in our new car. Both are great compared to the RX65 I ran for a lot of years. The technology keeps getting better. The Radenso is great, the R4 is even better.I run the R3 myself. The R3 was made by Korean manufacturer Attowave, who also makes the Radenso line. Uniden acquired Attowave in 2022.
I still believe Uniden could make a really good 10/11/12m radio, that would give the Chinese a run for their money. If they ever decide to make a radio, that would compete with the current China radios, I'll be first in line.
I ran BEL since the 80's, the last being a Vector 995. The R3 is far ahead of that great detector.I run a Radenso Pro in one car, bought it a while back (2014), and a R4 (2023) in our new car. I had several BEL's over the years and they were great for the time. I will say the best one I have run is the R4, it seems to see around corners and the range seems like it's infinite here in the desert flats, also in the flats of TexasI ran BEL since the 80's, the last being a Vector 995. The R3 is far ahead of that great detector.

It's funny you should say that, I remember when I was around 9 and in my parent's car had a factory built in CB radio made by Delco,a time before smartphones and the Internet, sometimes I think those were the better days,it's funny what you remember!!!!In a bygone era, the cb radio was the equivalent of today's Internet. Not so much anymore, cb radio is now a niche market. For old people. My kids tease me that I was born way back in the 1900s...
I have 2 Uniden 980 in my closet both pretty decent radios ,Rock Solid on SSB ,never had any problems with the displays on mine, but I have heard a lot of complaints concerning the issue, wouldn't surprise me if that was the plan all along, would kinda of make sense I guess!!The last couple of Bearcat 880’s I tried each had screen problems. Viewed straight-on, the display was dim. Viewed from the right, it was totally blank. Viewed from the left, it was very bright. It made me wonder if Uniden was making them so that the best view would be from the driver’s side with the radio in the middle where it is usually mounted.
If you have one, put it to the test.
The black face & knobs on the Grant looks slick!I have an R3, and a couple of years back I spent a bit of time messing with custom firmwares and talking to some people who are connected with Uniden. Apparently, the engineering effort behind the R3 and other similar generation Uniden RD's was the result of 1, maybe 2 people. A VERY small engineering and dev team that did some amazing work, all things considered.
(If only the R3 hardware went lower in K band frequency to detect the pesky Gatso cameras we have here, it would be perfect.)
As for Uniden CB's, my black face Grant XL that I got new as a kid, and my 980SSB still work great (no LCD issue here). I think they would struggle to compete financially, and make it worthwhile in today's 11m radio market. They do have a fairly extensive and current UHF CB market (477MHz CB) in AU/NZ.

I have one that I use when it storms and the display is okay. I did have one that was bad when new. It is a good CB radio.I have 2 Uniden 980 in my closet both pretty decent radios ,Rock Solid on SSB ,never had any problems with the displays on mine, but I have heard a lot of complaints concerning the issue, wouldn't surprise me if that was the plan all along, would kinda of make sense I guess!!
Yes but the hardware on my R3 doesn't go below 24.050 GHz on K band, and as luck would have it, most of the GATSO's are just below this here. The late USA rev R3 firmware does Gatso.
That is so true; the market will no longer warrant the R&D cost of producing new radios. They are also up against the exports, we all know nobody follows the rules anymore so to be competitive they would need to come out with an export killer. They won't because the FCC would thump them with big fines... it is no longer worth it. China owns us now...In today's cb market and considering what other segments uniden has their hands in, it's really a wonder that they're even still in the cb segment. I personally don't believe they'll ever invest for r&d into the cb world when it has segments that bring the shareholders the real coin.
