What is the Range of a HAND HELD CB?

1,288 Mile 10 Meter Hand Held Ham Radio Contact by WD0AKX - YouTube This probably doesn't happen every day....mother nature helped out along with a 2 1/2 foot antenna.

The way the bands were a few weeks ago something like this would have been easily accomplished but the bands are settling down again so no dice.

From inside a vehicle, no more than a mile or two on the highway, and less than a mile in urban areas. Transmit range would be even less than that. Hardly worth the bother! You would do much better with a Cobra 29 and a mag mount antenna.

Thank you for your reply. I've had this set for 20+ years and just found them again. My only interest is for monitoring traffic conditions near me while driving. Such as stalled traffic etc. and I'm not on the road very much these days but when I am it's cross country and I avoid interstate. Way too many nit-wits out there.

Unfortunately the antenna on a hand held CB is about equivalent to a dummy load. We used GMRS radios to communicate from house to house when we were taking care of my in-laws who lived about 100 yards up the street. We could normally talk from inside the houses with no problem.

I bought a couple of the President hand held CBs thinking that would make it easy to communicate with our cars also. But as it turned out, we could hardly hear each other while standing outside, and inside they didn't work at all.

Hook up a real antenna to the handheld CB and I can talk all over the place. GMRS / MURS is better suited for handheld use because the short antenna is better suited to the higher frequency.
