The owner's manual tells me I'll be putting out 6 to 7 watts PEP. I've got a 27' Cobra walkie talkie antenna, a 2' Seung plastic antenna and 4' center-loaded, telescoping walkie-talkie antenna from Radio Shack. Each mounts onto this radio. The last one performs the best, but I need to use a BNC/TNC adapter for it. It works amazingly well just about anywhere down here whether I'm on a boat, riding a bike or hooked up mobile or base since I'm surrounded by water where ever I go.

Ideal local conditions. Let's see if the atmosphere cooperates.

Don't say that cause he will probably end up winning if he takes the boat out to sea a bit LOL!! Wouldn't surprise me at all. The ocean is a big ole ground plane!! Mother Nature helps him tons. Wish I was that close to the water that is for sure!! Good luck to all, hopefully I'll be on pending any disasters!!!

I have to work Sunday but will try be on Saturday if the honey do list is not to long.

I've been standing on a sandbar island 10 miles from my house down here with the 4 foot, center loaded, Radio Shack telescoping walkie-talkie antenna on the Cherokee AH100 talking to my base. I couldn't talk much locally because I was being interrupted non-stop by folks from all over North America.

Yes, I really was on an SSB walkie talkie. Yes, the water temperature really was at 82 degrees in mid-October.

you make one DX contact with that, you deserve to win.

I see it now. 330 wins with a handheld on a sandbar!! And that is no BS!! It wouldn't suprise me one bit. Wish I had all that ocean to play with!! At least I'm within a couple miles of it. But it's not like being "on the water" for sure!!!. I'll be on. Maybe if it's early Sat morning I might be able to reach you now wavrider. New antenna is up (NV4K), and working well!! Talked to 488 across at Crystal River last weekend or week or so, and have been regularly talking to Cocoa Bch. Which is 70 miles straight shot. I'll give a try if you are going to be on. Say 7-8am Sat. Morning on 27.385 or wherever it's quiet where we can talk. And good luck to all!!

I have to work Sunday but will try be on Saturday if the honey do list is not to long.

We're supposed to have 5-8 inches of snow on Saturday (been in the 60's this week o_O) so I have nothing but time on my hands for a change to play radio. New final in the Uniden 980 so I'll be in the mix.

Turn the power back a bit. I know it seems dumb but just 3-4 watts will help keep it cooler. It does mine anyway. 3yrs and stock final hasn't popped yet!

That is what mine is set at. 3 watts AM, and around 8 watts pep on SSB. Radio hasn't failed yet. In don't ragchew or use it to much so maybe that's why. But I've held the mic key for a minute and the radio didn't get too warm. SSB is great. Radio never gets past luke warm. They are good little radios for driving a 2 pill amp. Hard to over drive one with it anyway lol!

We're supposed to have a cold front blow through tomorrow night or Saturday. When that happens, we get some interesting conditions down here in the Keys that allow us to pull in North and Central Florida. Could be interesting this week-end.
