Wondering if the 497 is too much for the LD 450? If I turn down variable pwr will I still overdrive the amp?

Well, prepare yourself for an influx of opinions here...
Mine is, probably too much radio for that thing. I’m not real familiar with that amp though so I could be wrong. According to the “rules” though yes, it’s too much because you’re gonna put too much in for what is required. That seems to be the rule and you can’t argue a data sheet, I don’t guess.
If it was like a 2 pill Dave style box, I’d say go for it but you’d still hear about how you’re overdriving the box. And going by the sheet, you would be. But I’ve done it before and never had an issue, I’ve seen it done and without issue and I know a close personal friend running a 497 into a 2 pill and there’s no complaint. He’s been doing it for over a year now and you can hear him when you don’t hear anyone else.
So my opinion is you’re probably better off not doing that, not with that amp.
Ok I just looked it up. It’s a 1 driving 4, right? It’s low drive too, right? If it was straight 4 then my opinion would probably be different. Says it requires what, 10-15 watts of drive? Maybe if you turn that radio down and it doesn’t have a swing kit in it, you’d be ok but I honestly don’t know. While I’m the guy that screams “do it, try it” I think maybe it’s just not the smartest idea.

Thanks. I did some research and came up with some info on the 450LD, not much but some. Got to check to make sure I don't swing into the unknown on input. I found a sticker on the inside from FLA. 595 CB Shop signed by "Doc" on 7-12. Year unknown. This 497 does over 125w+......it's been turned up and channel mod. Trying to locate some tech named "Doc" to ask what he may have done to it as a standard rule, all that is in another thread. (FLA. 595 CB Shop-Doc?).

It’s probably been modded and likely seriously overdrive that amp. If that amp was a 2 pill and mine, I’d do it but I have a bin full of parts in the shop for building amps.
Just don’t do it. I believe that’s a mosfet amp and that radio is just way to much for that. You’ll be asking for trouble unless you can really turn it down to not swing no more than the required or recommended power for that amp.

Have some Buryflex to install in truck first, getting rid of old coax. Couldn't tell you how old, but old. Just reluctant to take my PC66XL out. That radio has been running strong for 28~30 years, only the stock speaker quit, I use a aux speaker in dash.
Bought a 148 for sideband to install in truck but it drifts real bad, clarifier slides 16KHz. Touchy little snit. May need re-capped and other stuff. Poor Man's channel mod.....why? Low 10M is CW I'm told. It just ain't worth the aggravation right now.
The Stryker is solid, sounds good on reports with a Cobra 73 mic that came with it. Have others to try with it. Once I can get the 102" tuned for the Stryker, may try the 450 out.

Hope you have gotten things together and provisions for Florence. She's CAT 4 now, headed for Carolina's. Had to get out of Rockport due to Harvey last year, CAT 4. That place is still suffering. I saw somewhere on post that you are around Wilmington. Been there, nice. Friend of mine down here still has a house up there. Up on hill off a back bay.

Dude, I grew up in Mobile. I have had to get out so many times. Mother Nature has her own Force. Florence is going to do damage. Lots of rain that just sits there. Was working around Tampa years back and had to run away four times that season. Spend 3 weeks w/o power and running water after Fredrick hit Mobile. Week and a half no power in Baytown after Ike, worked Exxon Baytown with no power, trying get it back up. Then went to Exxon over in Beaumont to fix that one, no power. Don't wait till it's too late. Take down the antenna and Dee Dee Mow.

Hope all those nice beach houses in Wilmington down by the water are still standing afterward. Katrina whipped New Orleans East bad. Nothing but poles left afterward, there was a semi truck transplanted a mile and half into the saw grass outside of Irish Bayou off Hwy. 90. Ike took most of houses in Crystal Beach, TX. out to meet Sharky. I-45 before the causeway to Galveston had to be cleared by dozer of Yachts, fishing boats, shrimp trawlers, and dredging equipment.

Don't panic.....FEMA will be there shortly and pass out imaginary safe spaces. [Don't count on it]. The internment camps have already been set up at predisposed locations, count on that. The mass grave sites were already mapped out years ago. Harvey down here brought out the best and the worst in people. National Guard does show up, water and MRE's.....still have two cases of those nasty but edible delights. Texas people are the best, people from all over were sending food and supplies. One saw mill in the NW sent loads of lumber for rebuild, but City of Rockport still has that locked up tight out at the regional airport. Those materials were intended for the locals to rebuild. Guess the corrupt city officials will be building additions to their personal properties with that. Hope you are tight with the neighbors, they are your best defense from looters. Get a 4'x8' piece of plywood, paint " YOU LOOT, WE SHOOT!" and post it. Work for NOLA residents......and they did. Whole neighborhood wacked thugs day and night. Just like The King Ranch did for Texas.....started up in Oklahoma and worked south taking out the raiders and left the bodies where they dropped.
There will be some disappointed looters when they show up here. The only worth anything here besides me is my dump truck. And they’d bring that back and slap me for letting them take it.
