Hello everyone its been 25+ years since I picked up a cb/amateur mic. My last set up was a Cobra 29 LTD classic with a TX250 and single 4 ft firestik. Fast forward through 26 years in the emergency services and its time to retire and hit the road. I picked up a Cobra 29lx that has been peaked and tuned from a good friend. I would have went with a 29 LTD again but wanted the weather and scan ability since we will be traveling through Canada at the end of winter. I plan to run approx 30 ft of RG8x to a 3 ft Firestik/firefly on top of the RV. I am cosidering a Rm Italy Pcn60 stinger board for just a little extra when I need it. Looking for advice and input from more experienced CB'rs to update me on the latest improvements in technology so thank you in advance for your patience. On a side note my goal is to learn and educate myself and in the future test for my ham license.

Welcome. If there isn't any metal under the antenna, you may want to look into a "no ground plane" antenna made specifically for RV's.

It is mounted to a plate on the ladder. I checked for continuity between the ladder and the chassis to confirm it is attached to the metal frame. As an added measure I have run a 10awg wire from the antenna mount to the RV chassis on the same ground area as the CB itself. Is this correct or am I misunderstanding the process of how it works?

Yes and No. To ground The Ant It is a Dc ground to wire the ant to the frame helps. But the ant needs to see a R.F. Ground to work good try running a few wires about 8 ft. at the base of your ant that should help Is your ant At the top of latter or bottom? and what is your SWR?

Ok It is mounted near the top of the ladder I positioned it to keep it at 13 ft from the ground since most clearance is 13ft 6in or higher (keeping a wrench handy to remove if needed for low clearance) I dont know the swr yet I am waiting for my cable to be delivered so its not fully installed. thank you for the help.

Get your cellular communicator out and snap a pic of that external mounted 203, I’d like to see that.

Welcome Happy ! I ran an A-99 when parked mounted to my ladder on my 34' Winnie ( well bonded ) that's the key ! I had a crappy base loaded antenna mounted on the side behind drivers seat , I got it but was a PIA to get it right till I bonded that also ( mounted in Alum support ) . Just me , but get a cheap A-99 when parked . It worked for me and on ladder easy to change over .jmo

Sounds reasonable except for the “stinger board” If you want a little extra power, go with an external amp and have your radio’s power lowered to match it. There’s enough going on inside that radio. You’re merely taking away the internal speaker and replacing it with extra heat. Heat kills. The goal is to keep things cool and clean as possible, both physically and distortion free. Stinger boards fail in those regards. Besides, the small amount of extra power they produce will make little to no difference on the listeners end.
