World Record Giant Pumpkins
willemijns-2624.jpg

The current world record for giant pumpkins remains in Germany! For the second time in 3 years, the world record for giant pumpkins has fallen at the European Weigh-Off in Germany. German grower Mathia Willemijn brought this behemoth pumpkin weighing 2,624.6 pounds to the weigh-off on October 9, 2016. Congratulations to Mathia!

Up to now, the world record has largely come from the United States ann Canada.... Not any more!

Europe entered the competition with an enormous thud. Beni Meier of Germany broke the world record in 2014. He brought his 2,323.7 pound giant pumpkin to the European Championship Weigh-off on October 13, 2014.

As we watch the world record fall almost every year, we wonder... who's next and how much will it weigh?

It's over a ton, and no limit is in sight as to how big a pumpkin can grow.

A mammoth congratulations goes out to Tim Mathison. On October 11, 2013, Tim brought his now world record 2032 pound pumpkin to the Uesugi Farms Pumpkin Park Weigh-off at Morgan Hill, Ca. Tim grew his record pumpkin on the 2009 Wallace seed and crossed it with the 1554 Mathison. Yes, big genetics begets big.....and even bigger weights!

Unbelievably, it's over a ton!

We knew someday, someone would grow a giant, make that enormous, one ton pumpkin. With this firm belief, every serious, giant pumpkin grower set out to to be the one to produce the first one ton pumpkin.

We congratulate Ron Wallace, from Greene, Rhode Island on this remarkable accomplishment. The tiny state of Rhode Island looms large in the world of giant pumpkins.

Ron brought his 2009 pound pumpkin to the Topsfield Fair in Topsfield, MA on September 28, 2012.

Ron is no newbie in the hobby growing giant pumpkins. In 2006, he broke the the world record. At that time, all it took was a mere 1,502 pounds to break the world record. (see below)

Just how big can pumpkins grow? Who knows... the sky's the limit.

One of the very last giant pumpkin festivals of the year, produced the new 2011 world record!

We congratulate Jim and Kelsey Bryson from Ormstown, Quebec, Canada. They brought their record breaking 1,818.5 pound giant pumpkin to the Prince Edward County Pumpkinfest weigh, on October 15, 2011.

Growing a giant pumpkin to almost a ton in weight, is no small feat. But, every grower believes he or she can break the record. The only question in this hobby is when (not if), the first one ton pumpkin will be recorded.

Will it be you!!!!!?????? Find the Top Ten Secrets to Growing Record Giant Pumpkins

Note: This is the first time the world record has come from Canada, since Al Eaton broke the record in 2004 with a 1446 pound pumpkin. (See Al's pumpkin below)

Breaking the world record pumpkin weight has become an annual event. So, it's no surprise to learn that the record was indeed broken again this year. What is a surprise, was the weight, a record smashing 1810.5 pounds!

Chris Stevens of New Richmond, Wi. brought his 1810.5 pound pumpkin, to the Stillwater Harvest fest in Stillwater, Minnesota, on October 9, 2010.

Congratulations, Chris. What an awesome achievement!

Did you Know? Most/all the giant pumpkins are Atlantic giant pumpkins.

The 2009 world record breaker was Christy Harp with a 1,725 pound pumpkin. The new world record beat it by a whopping 85 pounds!

Did you Know? Most/all the giant pumpkins are Atlantic giant pumpkins.

Yes I do and I should be ashamed of myself if I did not. Dill's Atlantic Giant pumpkin was created by legendary grower Howard Dill of Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada. Among the literally hundreds of varieties of pumpkins, Dill's Atlantic Giant pumpkins are the record-breaking monsters that you see at fall festivals and Giant Pumpkin weigh-offs. Howard Dill lived only a couple miles from me. Sadly he passed away several years ago.

When you’d never thought of, much less ever heard of some zany or crazy things . . .

. . to then find it’s also a matter of competition,

well, it brightens one’s day or week.

Lawnmower Racing, was up there for me.

The dark side is said to be further experiments in biology. Specifically, something like gene-editing grizzlies to bring back the Short Faced Bear.

Ron , from Ri , is a neighbor , he's won @ Topfield Fair a few times . He showed up @ the farm asking if I would load his Prize winning Pumpkin in his truck with the skid steer . I respectfully declined & let him operate it ! This was before I knew it was a record holder ! I didn't want to be responsible for making a world record Pumpkin Pie ! The process & what they go through is amazing to see .

When they win , they are supposed to give the seeds to other contestants that grow , not sure if this rule is still in effect . I have had the seeds before but never attempted it , my garden isn't big enough !

Most of the seeds go to business on the web, so they can be sold for the grower or just sell them to whom ever may want them.
I tired several years back to grow these things, but, I soon learn that I didn't have enough room. Only got 3 in the 200 lb.+ range.

Have seen some of the seeds go for as much as $30 ea. I bought a couple seeds a few years back that came from a 1100 pounder and that cost me $20 just for two.
