The original 1446 that are in it are imo better than the hg transistors. If they are burnt and you have no choice or you simply have your mind set on a swap out then hg or dei are your only real choice. If it were me id sell the boomer and put that towards an amp with what I want.

I just talked to a local with a little inside knowledge and rumor has it the HG2SC2879"C" series are 150w pep where the others are 100w pep, 50% more. I just posted this in another thread.
I have no personal experience with these pills, im just told some of the better known builders are starting to use them more.
Maybe they are starting to design their own and will stop trying to reproduce the toshiba.

Thank you. Do you have an idea what this box should Dk on low med high ?
Id keep a low dk. This 4 pill I have now im driving with a Cobra 29 with a mosfet mod 4.5dk 30pep swing in gives me an 80w dk 350 pep swing at 14v. I can drive it harder and see 700-800 or more pep but its not worth popping pills.

The transistor slots in the board for the 1446 transistors are not large enough to fit any 2879's in there.
Look at the data sheets for the two different transistors you are talking about and you can see the physical size difference.
Now then, can it be done ???
Absolutely.
Not even cost effective because the board will need to be removed to resize the slots, possibly relocate the transformers to accommodate the larger transistor slots.
A bunch of "stuff" would have to be changed.
Not even worth the time or cost.
As mentioned above, sell it and get what you want.
If I was doing the conversion, it would cost at the very least as much as a new amplifier.

1446s had a reputation for having more modulation than the 2879s but less swing than the 2290. Correct me if that was not the "rumor" during the early 2000s or do I have it backwards? Easily get 250 PEP with two of them. Reminds me of the infamous Palomar 'Elite' 250 Vern made 2x1446s for just under a C-note- even if it lasted a couple of years it was worth it.

The 1446 are ~80W pills. Shouldn't feed them more than 10W/pep. Radio should be set to dead key 1/2-1w and swing low. More than that, and the amp just swings out garbage watts. At 14v a 2 pill 1446 should do ~160-190W peak. Anything more than that, and you are just putting garbage watts out. True test is with a reliable meter and a 50 ohm dummy load only.
