Taking a family trip next week with stops at Fort Campbell KY, Petersburg KY, Cincinnati Ohio, Williamstown KY then back home so it'll consist of a few miles.
That said....
I just ordered one of these little radios along with the new Virginia antenna to run in the family wagon. A perfect opportunity to justify getting one and for testing purposes haha...
While the new Virginia wouldn't be my first choice, I only did so because I don't think my wife will go for the Stryker sra10 mag mount on the family cruiser.
Hopefully I can report back on both products in due time.
A base load WILSON 500 or bigger is almost invisible on a mommy van (find someone else has seen as many as me the past ten years).
All that roof . . . the base coil disappears.
Little Wil ain’t worth it (I’ve made them work, but . . . ). 500, 1000 or 5000 is the ticket for
design (brand less important).
Do a good job with the coax lead, and you’re gold.
Bond roof rack, or, as Handy Andy suggests,
USE the roof rack as antenna mount base due to poor van panel/body bonding. (See thAt thread of a 108” on a van roof).
HUSTLER HQ27 (56”) on a QD in a
WILSON 305-700 CB antenna mount.
“Sweetie, there’ll be a day we have the family in several vehicles. This trip gives me the information I need to be cost-effective about this one. As there is a minimum in price, AND a way to be low-key”.
(Show her a picture of a 52” SIGNAL ENGINEERING GOLDEN ROD to know what
isn’t low key. But would be performance king).
And, start a count of private vehicles
with every type of aftermarket antennas. Dawdle thru western OK as everyone in oilfield has a WILSON cell amp antenna on pickups.
You’ll hit one-hundred (100) before the end of Day Two on the road.
Walcott Radio Bag (see my posts in CB Revival thread) hung on back of front passenger seat fixes that problem. Earpiece and VOX mic if you have them.
And hit OKC on IH40 at about 1600. I can pick up Rattlesnake and the crew downtown (where 40 & 35 cross) at the El Reno Scale House west of town.
And I’d bet you could keep them talking past TINKER AFB (where I lose them in van clutter).
They are a highlight. Best CB group in nation where truck drivers are concerned (AM-19).
