11 meter is very quiet?

One of the previous owners of my 139XLR modded the clarifier. The 5 khz swing was just too touchy on the stock control , so I switched to a 10-turn pot. Still a PITA. So I put the Cobra on the bench and set the clarifier back to stock. Never did like unlocked clarifiers, because tuning in an off-freq station put my transmitter off-freq too. I had not done a realignment after recapping it, so I figured while it was on the bench why not. The transmit was almost spot-on, but the receive was way off. Even after realigning, it was really sad for an 858 . Looked it over and found that someone had done a 2SC2999 mod to it. Put a stock 2SC1307 in, and when I hooked it up, the receive had come back to life!! No more "alligator radio."

Talked to "Double Zero" (Steve) in Aukland New Zealand yesterday afternoon . When we got our antennas aligned, we talked for a solid 30 minutes on 38LSB. Best QSO I've had since getting back on the air.

When you least expect it.....
As usual, I turned the radio on this morning, expecting to hear a lot of dead air. I was surprised to here the DX rolling. I've been talking most of the morning and it's still rolling in. (10:50 am)

Edit: 11:15am and dx is no more. It was great while it lasted!!
73 to all my friends!

I heard 399 out of Columbia this afternoon while I was driving east of Houston heading towards Louisiana. He talked to someone in Alabama. Then I heard him talking about his horizontal antenna with someone else. I tried in vain to make contact. The conditions dropped out pretty quickly so I cranked my metal rock playlist back up. Maybe next time...

Last week I made contacts to Oregon which just dropped as quickly as it appeared. I did have few good mornings of contacts to the northeast and I always like listening to them guys around Beantown. My best contacts were to 237 in Connecticut and 541 in Arizona. I even heard the turd in the dirt briefly. I think he may actually be barefoot now hahaha. His signal is nowhere near where it used to be. Heck I even made contact to Puerto Rico this past week. I have been hearing Australian stations too but have had no luck. I will be glad when I can get a base station and run a little more power and a much better antenna.
