I scan through that band from time to time when DX is in. Lots of stuff still going on down there....... I hear military, various utilities especially in rural areas, California Hwy Patrol, and a shit ton of rural fire departments all over the U.S.
And just like 11 meters, that whole 30-50...
Fairly remote island off the west coast of Canada. Less than 1000 people on the island. Three ferries and at least 12 hours travel time just to reach the mainland of North America (Vancouver) so we don't go away very often!
We live on a 2 acre homestead with a few (but not many) nearby...
Just got on for 30 minutes and made another 12 contacts......mostly in Texas and Kentucky. The band is wide open to pretty much the whole of North and Central America right now!! Regular band is hopping and and there's lots going on up above 40 too.........
Every time I call CQ I get several...
The opening only lasted a few hours. By 2pm PST it was all over and back to mostly static. Still hearing a few stations from the southern US mixed in with some faint Australians, but they are way down in the weeds. It was sure fun while it lasted!
Well you haven't been missing much JJ! It's been slim pickings until today....just a little California, Mexico and Hawaii on occasion.
Nice to have some real conditions happening for once. I won't get my expectations too high though; it will probably be back to static tomorrow........
Incredible conditions right now! Just talked to 15 stations in a row......all of them in Texas, Missouri, Louisiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Arkansas. Everybody pounding in with huge signals on 36 thru 40 and lots of folks in that same geographical area up above 40 as well.... 27.435, 27.485...
Central valley of California, Bay area, and Arizona all booming in here the last few hours. No problem making contacts on a barefoot 5555N2 this afternoon.......
Hope others are getting some conditions as well; it's been awfully quiet the last few days!
Don't remember that! I had my first SSB rig around the late 1980's and the clarifier was either "locked" or "unlocked" by then. Never heard it called anything else until this discussion came up here on WWDX.
I have been wondering the same thing! I upgraded my long case 5555N2 as well. No problems and no regrets but I would like to have the old firmware handy just in case I do ever need to roll back for some reason. I wonder if Pez could post it here for us?
I also realized yesterday that the...
Either you got lucky or I was unlucky.
I bought an Iota supply as it was highly recommended by someone I know. Big mistake...... it generated massive RFI all across the HF spectrum and above making it useless for what I needed it for. I sent it back and bought a Megawatt. I have no regrets...
When new my Megawatt 36 Amp was totally RF quiet down to about 2 MHz. It got really noisy down in the AM broadcast band. I put a cheap line filter on the AC input and mounted the filter and the supply in a small metal case with a grounded plug. Now I have zero RFI anywhere from 0.5 to 30 MHz.
As my long departed Dad would have said.... "Do it properly or not at all"
The band has plenty of off frequency radios already; "sort of" isn't good enough.
Find a qualified tech and have that radio aligned properly.
That 457 is a fantastic radio by the way! I have three dead ones here that...
For home use, the Daiwa meters work just fine. As I said upthread, I have compared my Daiwa to a Bird and they read, for all intents and purposes, the same.
No point in spending big money on a Bird meter when the Daiwa will give you the same information for much much less!
I've had several...
Great conditions here the last few days, and yesterday was spectacular. Almost as good as last spring! Had skip from all over all day long and well into the evening. it finally died down around 11pm last night. Talked to every state in the western USA plus all western Canadian provinces and...
