The 2 meter antenna will work ,sort of, ..... a simple dipole antenna will really bring the receive to life and they are cheap to build. There are several sites that will walk you through step by step on how to build a dipole .
As you are studying for your tech ticket also study for the...
Bamm dont give up as of yet !! Research your options before throwing in the towel.
You would be surprised what folks have come up with to hide antennas.
I have heard of people putting dipoles in their attics( even virticals if the attic was tall enough),on the facure ,on the upper walls under...
That price isnt to bad for that radio,if it looks good and output is where it should be,around 85 to 100 watts depending on band I would say jump on it....
Talk to that ham about a low priced antenna tuner as well unless that radio has a tuner built in,MFJ makes tuners that will work...and...
I would have to say give the 2970 family of radios a hard look, even if you are limited to 100 watts, just get inside the radio and turn the power down to 100 watts max and there ya go.The radio will not pull any more amps than any other 100 watt radio.

With the general class ticket try to find a all mode HF radio of some kind that covers 160 to 10 meters..$300 to $500 should get you into a radio,an antenna tuner of some kind and a simple dipole antenna that covers at least part of the HF bands will get you all the action you...
Comet,Diamond and Larsen all make good duel band antennas
Take a look at this link for duel band radios
Associated Radio - New and Used Amateur Radio Gear
I am sure any of them would fit the bill
No external amp is barefoot in my book regardless of power output
That is a good contact :thumbup1:
and Hayseed is right ,better watch it or you will be getting the " I need more contacts on SSB " bug
You will be really surprised at the contacts you will be making .There is...

Missed by 4 on the general test, that is really good for not studying on that part of the test....
