    Amateur radio & computer

Here is my dumb question of the day. I see computer connections for radios, but I am not sure what is being done by the computer and what is being done by the radio. It appears that the radio is a standalone device and the computer is only used for certain protocols, logging and other...

    DJ-G7 vs. VX-8R

It looks like a nice radio. I handled one at HRO and Universal. For me as a new ham, there was one deciding factor. This was going to be my first and only radio for a while and then my only HT. I didn't plan on replacing it anytime soon and I have learned not to trade, because I am not good...

military "random wire" HF or lo-band backpack antenna

I am thinking that the wire you saw was not an antenna. Alice clips are not great on mole gear so some people run line or wire through different loops to make sure their gear stays with them. Could this be what you saw?

    Yaesu VX-8r Review

The Stock antenna is not bad for me. I replaced it with a Diamond SRHF40 and Diamond SRH789. The SRHF40 is nice. I like how bendable it is. I drop it in to my pocket and don’t think about breaking anything. The SRH789 I bought for going out of band. I don’t use it as much as I thought I...

    Yaesu VX-8r Review

I don't know how you waited so long. I did that my first day. I figured if it was going to die, I wanted it to die under warranty. While I am thinking about it, I removed the sticky cover to add my blue tooth. I didn't put it back. (No good reason, just didn't do it at the...

What have you done in/on ham radio this week?

I was traveling this past week. I plotted my directions, and loaded repeaters into memory. I still need to work on this. They were loaded, but not in a good order. I need to re-organize them and change how I used the bands. As I drove in and out of range I listened and then tried to hit...

What have you done in/on ham radio this week?

I have done this on other forums for other hobbies. It let the experts brag about what cool stuff they were doing and let the newbies see what is working and what is not. Additionally, as a newbie I will be posting my accomplishments. Hopefully I will see progress and maybe help someone who...

Newb looking for advice and suggestions.

I have a VX-8R. I like my VX-8R for what it is, but it doesn't do everything I want to do. I don't believe any radio will do everything, so you have to decide what you want to do and buy a radio that do that well. The 4 bands that the VX-8R uses are great for using around a major city to...

    Powering FT897 in the field

I am not very good at this so check my logic. I can run 4 batteries in serial to get my voltage, but I only get 900mAh. Lets call this one pack. If I run say 4 pack in parallel, I will get my voltage and 2800mAh. This still isn't much, but I could rig up 8 or 12 or 24 packs. Right?

    Powering FT897 in the field

I was at Cabelas today looking at those. I like the idea. It I was planning on operating all day in field conditions and then take the setup home or to a generator (e.g. Field days or in the aftermath of Katrina) I think that would be the ticket. But right now I am thinking more man portable...

    Powering FT897 in the field

I like the FT897, but don't like options for powering it in the field. The internal batteries are expensive and don't last very long and recharging them requires taking the unit apart and couldn't be done in the field very easily. And to top it off, it is limited to 20W output. Although...

    scare tactic ?

Although true, I listened to two old hams talking on a repeater this morning. Neither one ever gave a call sign. It was at least a 20 minute drive. Is it my repeater? no. I don't even belong to that club. Did they violate the law? yes. Will they get in trouble? probably not. Does it...

    VX-8R AA battery

I am looking high and low for more powerful batteries. I have even considered only using 1 or 2 batteries with a dummy battery or 2. I have a feeling this is a dead end project.

    Any Boatanchor Collectors?

When you say operator radio, do you mean it is repairable at home like old cars, or ....? I didn't know you could hear the difference. I was under the impression that the new radios were better sounding because of all the digital parts. As far as being around in 50 years, I don't think...

    VX-8R AA battery

I have a AA battery pack. I don't like it because when I use it, I can only have 1W output. Can I increase output by changing the type of batteries I am feeding the battery pack? I was thinking something like Protected UltraFire 14500 AA sized 3.6V Li-Ion Rechargeable Battery 900 mAh...

    New HT, newb

Although FT-857 and FT-897 can be mobile, I don't think that is the kind of mobile rig he is talking about. If he is thinking of that kind of mobile rig, this is a completely different conversation. It is also a good bit more money. As a side note, I plan on getting a FT-897 as my second...
