    Ground Plane Contest

Ha! Well Homer, it'd be pretty cheesy for me to win my own contest, though I have to say that $1M bill looks pretty good! You know, the bands always fold up and go on vacation whenever I have a new antenna to test, but I finally eeked out a couple of W3 special events stations a few minutes...

    Ground Plane Contest

OK, here we go: Radial mount from the DX department at Walmart: Highly scientific construction technique (notice that up on the counter is what I was drinking, Diet Coke): I was lucky to find these: Antenna at resonance, 20 cans (I didn’t crop the photo...

    Ground Plane Contest

Another setback-- radial mount snapped in two when I tripped over a radial wire while moving it. Off to Walmart for a replacement. Today is the day.

ICOM IC-718/Wide SSB Filter- 'FL-257' or Collins Filter?

Hear, hear! I don't mind ESSB IF the bandwidth is within reason. But overdriven xmitters/amps are just as bad. How steep are the skirts on this 3.3 Collins filter after the mod?

    Ground Plane Contest

Well nuts.... I was taking it out of the garage to put it in the air and start tuning it... and dropped it, and it came apart in three pieces. The new glue will cure overnight, then tomorrow. Man... and this was my idea. If I were a contractor working for me, I'd fire me...

    Astatic Power Desk Mic

I had one of these, briefly. Tried it on both my Kenwood and my Icom. It sounded pretty good but picked up everything and I didnt like bending down to talk into it. Ended up putting a thick book on the operating desk for it to sit on. It had RF feedback issues with both radios though (even...

ICOM IC-718/Wide SSB Filter- 'FL-257' or Collins Filter?

Yeah, reading back over this, I think you're right. I was thinking replacing the recv IF filter with the Collins when I read that. The AGC mod is worth doing, IMHO, you just need a fine tipped iron, a magnifier and good light! Rick

I thought it was cool, also!

ICOM IC-718/Wide SSB Filter- 'FL-257' or Collins Filter?

The rcvr defaults to fast AGC on SSB, which is very tiresome to listen to, especially on the lower bands when it's noisy. The mod is just soldering a jumper but it's between legs of surface mount components. That is just NO fun to what are now middle-aged eyes! That mod is about half way...

    Ground Plane Contest

Nuts, I got impatient and tried to move it too soon. Have to fix a couple of things. Be advised, this will possibly be the worst antenna you will ever see. Tomorrow should be the day.

    Logging programs

Thanks! I'm not much of a contestor, but will look at 32. Well, QSLing isn't dead, but it's a different game than it used to be. Most of the managers and direct stations have QSLd when I have sent $ direct as their profile states (and I don't do that often-- we all have postage costs and...

    Logging programs

Thanks Hutch but I can't go off into Mac land right now! (I would, just for Garage Band...) Mike, Can Logger32 upload directly to EQSL and/or LOTW? Thanks, Rick

    Logging programs

I'll admit I'm old school as far as logs and QSLs, but I'm in the minority on that. Unfortunately EQSL is here to stay it seems, and I have done that on a one-off basis now and then, having a few DX cards printed and mailed to me. It looks to me as the Century Club and the like are the only...

ICOM IC-718/Wide SSB Filter- 'FL-257' or Collins Filter?

Hey, let us know what you think about what you ultimately decide to use. I've been mulling over the W4RT dual filters for a while now. Doing the AGC mod was a pain, but that was a HUGE improvement to me. Listening to the 718 on SSB was tiring, and I don't know why Icom didn't allow for AGC...

It looks like Apple needs to hire some new antenna engineers

Son, you ain't never lied. I work in the wireless bidness and deal with that every day.

    More Field Day 2010 Pics

Yep, Ringo and a squalo, or that's what they look like. Nice setups-- I like the jumper cables from the Jeep to the radials!

CB jargon on the amateur bands

Points taken. Tell you what though, the local club (largest in the state) meets about a mile from my house, twice a month. I went to exactly ONE meeting, not knowing anyone, and happened to walk into a political fight. I have not been back, and I won't be. If I want that, I'll go to the...
