Use a very fine sand paper or the striker pad from a pack of matches and carefully clean all the contact points under the keying bar, if these points are pitted or corroded the mic will not work. Hope this helps .

Your best option for handling excess coax is to serpentine the cable into a 12 to 18 inch yarn-like skein. Secure the skein in the center with a wire tie and tuck it away. AS kor b suggested.
