Some of the places that I have been too have really tight clearances. I'd feel much better with a whip than the Tarheel up there.

Now that I can see the picture, it might be a good idea to use a mirror mount.

If you are looking for a mount you can do what I did. I attached a bracket to an exhaust clamp that would fit my roof rack tube and used that. You should be able to do the same thing. Depending on the size of the tubing you may be able to use a mirror mount like a cb radio would use

Why and 857 if you are only going to use vhf/UHF? In your case I would go with a dual band antenna that is a half wave on 2m or one antenna for each band, using a dedicated half wave on each one. They will be less effected by lack of ground plane.

It does support it but it doesn't meet the MURS requirements. Finding good murs approved radios is hard and expensive.

It just depends on where you want to go. A good 2m rig or even a dual band 2m/70cm rig will still be relevant to you if you upgrade to General. You can pick up some decent older rigs for HF even though you would be limited to transmitting on a section of 10 until you upgrade to General. You...
