I'd rather learn on a $20 radio than a $2000. That was kind of the point of picking it up. I know that the 505 is more difficult to modify due to SMT, but I'd still feel better about working with something less valuable as a learning experience.
I tried the 636 today while transmitting into a dummy load and monitoring on another cb. I was very surprised that the 636 had a much lower volume that the stock mic. In order to make the 636 as loud on the receiving side as the stock mic, I had to turn up the volume on the receiver. I'm not...
So true. My dad always asks me why I don't just buy the car that I want. I say besides the fact that they don't make it, tinkering with things is half the fun.
Yes I realize that it might be pointless for a low cost radio but that is beside the point. Something's are just a learning experience or just fun to tinker with. Like putting cams and headers on your mustang or camaro when you could have bought a corvette.
On something like a Uniden 505 that doesn't have RF gain, could I disconnect the existing squelch knob from the squelch control, run the squelch wide open and have the knob control RF gain instead? If I had to choose one, I'd rather have adjustable RF gain. I usually keep squelch all the way...
Congrats getting on the air. I'm a tech and getting bored with 2m. We have great repeater coverage locally, but there are long stretches where activity is low. 10 meters was fun when it was wide open, but I haven't had as much luck lately. Still waiting for an opportunity to take my general...
No doubt because it does sound like a situation where "they don't make em like they used to." At least it sounds like now, if you don't have one of the old good ones, there is at least a path to get close.
Robb,
Thanks for taking the time to do this review and to follow up with these modifications. I will be trying this myself on a 148 and if it works well will probably do it again for a friend who is just getting into radio.
I'm hitting my local repeater at full quieting with about 500mw from a ground plane 2m antenna in the attic. No one can believe that I am running such low power. I'm using a G5RV Jr. in the attic and I've made good strong contacts on 10 with and without power.
You can still run an indoor antenna. May not work as well as what you are used to but it will work. I'm running attic antennas only and a mobile setup and still having fun.
It is a obvious fact that we are moving more towards Democratic Socialism, much like where Europe. It is funny though when you think about it, we blazed our trail in an unknown land for something different than what was offered over there, but then turn around and listen to those who try to take...
Made one today with the wire I had on hand, but I don't know if I will use it. The voltage drop across the filter is too much. On full draw (20a) I'm seeing ~13.5 V to my power block right before the filter and 12.6 at the end of the filter. I don't know a ton about voltage drop, but I'm not...
