Chinese made electronics is still not up to par with quaility control. Of course some of this can be put on the "Brand" that eventually sells it. Just as an example, Cobra might put out for bids for their next board and go with the lowest bidder, who may use parts that aren't quite as good...

Hey Switch Kit, I agree about the buyers but that's what makes it so funny to me....he smashes his rig to make his statement and I just grin when I think of the look(s) on the faces of those buyers who wanted the rig but at a garage sale price. I'll bet their jaws dropped when they saw it!

There's nothing wrong with 1:7 SWR, and even 2:0 won't kill you or your rig, especially on the higher channels which are SSB, you're not putting out a constant carrier. Even if you were to get the SWR from 1:7 to 1:1 you wouldn't notice any difference in your receive or transmit.

Don't forget to check HRO for new 857's. Yaesu always seems to have a $70 coupon which puts the price around $680, and I've seen a lot of used ones on Ebay end up in the low to mid 600's. For the difference NEW would be the way to go (IMHO) Woody

If I were to rate them it would be: President Grant, followed by Uniden Grant and Cobra (made in the same time period, with later model Cobra's coming in last. They used the same footprint but got cheap and picked the lowest bidder to make the board.

It's a "GOOD-BETTER-BEST" scenario. Top of the heap would be "Made in Japan", at the bottom it would be "Made in China" with the rest stuck in the middle.
