Instead of running multiple amps, which will no doubt sound bad, why not pick up a nice Kenwood, Icom or Yaesu and have a real nice sounding station? One of these used isn't going to cost anymore (and maybe less) than all those 'pills'
When doing these antenna comparisons, isn't it important to test with stations which are varying distances away from the source? Due to varying angles of radiation, antenna A might work better at < 20 miles, while in the same test antenna B might out perform at distances of > 20 miles...
Holy cow. Seems like a amp that takes 40 watts in to give 120 is terribly inefficient. Like... WHY BOTHER Inefficient. 40>120 is something like a 4.75 db increase, right. From what I understand you need to increase the signal 5db before it will even be noticable by the other person on the...
I've built myself a 2 element rectangle moxon out of alumining tubing. SWR is a pretty decent 1.3:1, however it almost always under performs my 5/8 wave Maco.
The Maco is about 15 feet higher up, but for DX I wouldn't expect that to matter so much. On the receiving end the Moxon is...
I've often wondered the same thing. The Ranger 2950 seemed like a nice step forward in the mid 90's but most of the crap being sold today be it a Magnum , a Galaxy or whatever is the same 70's era design, with the switch needed to get the extra channels. Not going to buy one of those. And...
Gamegetter - Thanks for the link to Mosley. Their MiniBeam is exactly what I was looking for, though that price is a bit steep.
Henry - Can you suggest any books for building Moxon antennas? I'm not interested in the theory behind them, just the nuts and bolts of how to construct one...
So we know there is 1/4 wave, 1/2 and 5/8 wave vertical/omni antennas, with the longer antenna giving better performance.
It seems that all directional antennas are built on roughly a half wave design with element lengths in the neighborhood of 18 feet.
Question:
1. Has any one ever...
TELEX/HYGAIN's own advertising called it a 5/8 wave. Maybe thats cause no one back in the day knew what .64 wave was. In fact I never heard the term until the last year
(Since 5/8 = .625, thats so close to .64 probably not worth arguing about)
Couple of questions about mounting a dipole antenna...
Is there a minimum mounting height for a dipole? Obviously with any antenna the higher it is the better, but outside of this, is there a minimum height for it to be mounted so that it radiates properly and/or the ground doesn't...
Thanks for all the feedback. Sounds like everyone is against the idea, so I'll punt on it for now. (But yes, the attic is plenty big. Its easily 60 ft long and over 30 feet wide) Nothing up there now except for a TV antenna.
Back in the 80's I had a generic 1/2 ground plane, while my friend across town had a Starduster. The Starduster always did better on DX. Around local it was only slightly better, Largely due to the fact it was mounted 50 feet up while mine was only 30.
Can't say how the Sirio compares
I am thinking about getting a 4 element beam to add some more punch above what I have today with my Maco 5/8 vertical.
1. Due to a number of low hanging trees, I can not put a beam outside, it would have to go in the attic. Would a beam in the Attic offer a significant improvement over 5/8...
Im hoping someone can help me out. My Ranger 2950 just died. Was working fine for years, and turned it on last night and got nothing. Well, practically nothing. The LCD on the front is totally dead. Nothing happens when I key the mic. But when it is turned on I can hear a very faint white...
