Not a bad amp for SSB use. Dentron amps left a lot to be desired in the PS department, IMHO (much like Heathkit) so I wouln't press it too hard on AM. And 572B's should be available for quite some time, in one form or another.

As you may have discovered already, it depends on the mode and the type of interference. Modes with sharp rise times usually work best with the AGC set slow so the reciever doesn't "pump"...especially when the AGC attack time is lazy. Trying to copy CW with the AGC set to Fast gets me mentally...

Remember what the metering circuits are measuring. That 50 watts you're seeing isn't TRUE PEP. It's an average based on the modulation characteristics of your voice. And most rules (most notably PEP=4 x carrier) are based on a sine wave--which your voice ain't. That's kind of puzzling...

Or build!!! In thinking a little bit more, I'd be willing to say that across the board, the average Solid state transceiver can be accurately marketed as a stand-alone digital, SSB, and CW radio, but is only good (as far as AM is concerned) as an exciter for an amplifer.

I wouldn't bother with one. Here's the key test: does the noise level go up when you hook up an antenna? If the answer is yes, then you're radio is sensitive enough to pick up everything on the band. Adding a preamp may actually make things worse by adding IMD or other bugs in the process.
