    Dentron 160-10 L.

Not a bad amp for SSB use. Dentron amps left a lot to be desired in the PS department, IMHO (much like Heathkit) so I wouln't press it too hard on AM. And 572B's should be available for quite some time, in one form or another.

    Fast AGC....

As you may have discovered already, it depends on the mode and the type of interference. Modes with sharp rise times usually work best with the AGC set slow so the reciever doesn't "pump"...especially when the AGC attack time is lazy. Trying to copy CW with the AGC set to Fast gets me mentally...

    ic706mk2g on AM

Remember what the metering circuits are measuring. That 50 watts you're seeing isn't TRUE PEP. It's an average based on the modulation characteristics of your voice. And most rules (most notably PEP=4 x carrier) are based on a sine wave--which your voice ain't. That's kind of puzzling...

    POOF !!!!!!!!

I'd like to know what he was doing in there...it almost looks like he's got a hacksaw in there sawing away at something....right up until the fireworks...

    A note to the moderators...

This site is rapidly becoming my favorite radio related site on the internet. I've been a ham for 14 years and seen all the flame wars on the zed and eHam, and it's refreshing to see a watering hole where EVERYONE can get together, chew the fat, and share ideas. Keep up the good work!!

    PRIDE EARTHQUAKE

I once had a repeater controller that had a mouse build a nest on it. Like you said, crapped and peed all over it. I washed it off using regular warm tap water and let everything sit for a couple of days to dry. Plugged it back in and everything was AOK. Of course this board was all...

    ic706mk2g on AM

Or build!!! In thinking a little bit more, I'd be willing to say that across the board, the average Solid state transceiver can be accurately marketed as a stand-alone digital, SSB, and CW radio, but is only good (as far as AM is concerned) as an exciter for an amplifer.

QRN is right on the money. I'd like to add that most manufacturers say to set the carrier level to 40 watts. THIS IS DEAD WRONG. It leaves NO headroom and will severely tax the cooling system (not to mention the power supply) of your radio, especially when you set a brick on the key and talk...

FCC vs. Local Law Enforcement...FCC wins!!

I gotta hand it to them...drafting arrest warrants against the FCC takes balls.... Church Hill police won’t charge FCC agents; TBI may take up misuse of police radio investigation

    QRZ gets a Wakeup Call

The only thing remotely interesting in this is that QRZ thinks it shouldn't apply to them, whereas eBay, on the other hand should be held accountable. And what's the difference? There isn't one.

    Preamp

I wouldn't bother with one. Here's the key test: does the noise level go up when you hook up an antenna? If the answer is yes, then you're radio is sensitive enough to pick up everything on the band. Adding a preamp may actually make things worse by adding IMD or other bugs in the process.

    Too Ironic!!!

Actually, it's not happening on just 10 meters. There was one father and son who both got their Tech tickets around here. They decided to work 20 meter DX one night in the General portion of the HF phone band. Now....first off there is no Tech allocation on 20 meters AT ALL.... and they ended...

    Too Ironic!!!

From the ARRL: "Be Careful on 10 Meters (Jun 4, 2008) -- With recent band openings beginning on 10 meters, ARRL has received word that a number of amateurs have been heard using SSB below 28.300. "We urge everyone to remember that 28.000 to 28.300 MHz is reserved for RTTY and data, including...

question about the FCC's description of a "cb transmitter"

Ok, so will you agree that "yellow dot" radios ARE NOT "CB transmitters" as defined by the FCC? If you do cede that point, then how do we know that someone hasn't got a citation for selling a "CB transmitter" when in reality, the radio has no possible way of being a CB transmitter?? I'm...

question about the FCC's description of a "cb transmitter"

So if one model of the 2950DX could not be modded for out of band....then why are all 2950s on the FCC blacklist??? An excellent example of the point I'm trying to make!!!

question about the FCC's description of a "cb transmitter"

I can mod out my Kenwood 450 and program channels 1-28 in memory slots...does that make it a CB as well? Or even better take an old low-band Motorola and reprogram it. Is it a CB? It wasn't that long ago that Ranger advertised in such "popular" CB rags such as QST and CQ. I can remember...

    Here's another Warning!

Wow...that's....poetic. You know CW, I've been a ham going on 14 years. Earned my Extra the hard way--20 WPM code. As I tuned across 75/80 last night about 12 AM local, I could count on both hands the number of SSB QSOs across the whole band (and the band was relatively open for a...

    APRS

I'm right there with you, friend. I once sat in a guys APRS decked out mobile with laptop, GPS, and 2 meter as he ran the system thru it's paces. I asked him "So why is this better than calling you on the radio and asking "What's your position" and you looking at your GPS and saying "I'm at...

question about the FCC's description of a "cb transmitter"

My opinion, for what it's worth. Well...in a word, YES. It is a double standard. However, the FCC uses a multi-pronged decision making process in determining a radio's exact classification, and (thankfully) it seems they place most weight on the question of intent. In other words, what's the...
