    Random wire question

Thanks for all the quick replies, much appreciated. My tuner is an MFJ-949E. It's supposed to be able to handle a random wire. It has a terminal at the back for a random wire but I've heard that there are some lengths to avoid, for instance a half wave on the band I'm operating on. I probably...

    Random wire question

Hey guys, I need your help again. We are moving house once again. I may not be able to immediately put up an antenna where we're going but as a crazy ham, I'd still want to get on air as soon as possible. I'm thinking random wire into my tuner. 40 meters is where I want to operate in. How long...

    Oh that Chinese quality!

Maybe the Chinese are planning to conquer Africa....

I wonder what Billy runs...sometimes I get him 10db here.

    Took my general class exams...

I've actually worked WE6DX, Billy from San Diego on 7.177. That was with my full size dipole though. I wasn't able to join the group last night but they're saying now that propagation to N America was fair last night. Our local ragchew group hangs out at 7.173 so we can just slide up without...

    Took my general class exams...

I've actually been on 40 and 15 meters since I got my tech(our equivalent) which are the HF privileges for tech here. Thanks a lot guys, and yes, I would love to have you all on my log someday. :)

    Took my general class exams...

A year after getting my tech, I finally took my general class exams. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the results which in our neck of the woods will take a month. I'd like to pass in on the first try since exams are only once a year in our place. I hope to pass so I can operate on 20 meters. :D

    Shortened Dipole

Hehe yeh, I had a tensioner actually. My problem was if the branch broke and fell to the ground maybe 30 feet below. Or even if the tree fell down. This tree is a soft wood tree and is known for falling in the wind. Thanks anyway. :)

    Shortened Dipole

    That should be interesting. :)

    Shortened Dipole

I made my first DX contacts on 15 meters with my full size dipole but I never heard anything so far on 10 meters. I'll keep trying though, thanks. :D

    Shortened Dipole

Woot! First DX qso with my short dipole. R2DA, Valery in Moscow. I got a signal report of 5/9. QRZ.com says a bit over 5,000 miles short path. Not bad at all. :D

    Shortened Dipole

Thanks, I lowered the apex around 6 feet from the standoff because I needed to open up the angle a bit. With the balun up near the standoff, all I could manage was around a 60 degree v angle and that didn't do too well. As it is, the apex is probably around 20 feet high with an v angle of around...

    Shortened Dipole

Thanks, most of the wires are guy wires. I have a twin 5 element 2 meter antenna with an inverted j pole array in the center also for 2 meters.

    Shortened Dipole

After 4 attempts trying to build one, I finally gave up and had somebody make one for me. My problem with the full sized one was that I had to tie one leg to a neighbor's tree and everytime the wind blows kind of hard(often), I worry about the tree branch breaking and bringing down my mast...

    2 meters ...hmmm

We've had a lot of near misses from typhoons in our area. We sustained damage where power was knocked out for days at a time. People were displaced by flooding. And even one largish earthquake. The repeater of our club is situated on top of a hospital, the rationale being that we can always have...

    2 meters ...hmmm

Depends on what you want to get out of it. I do find repeaters boring. I'm a simplex kind of guy and I used to enjoy getting out as far as I could. I can do that anymore since I live in an antenna height restricted area(straight path on a runway). As also enjoyed our local ragchews immensely...

    Need your thought again gurus...

Thanks, for the concern. Yes. I'll try a wall wart and if that doesn't work. I still have a couple terminals free on my PSU.

    Need your thought again gurus...

Hehehe yep, I actually checked prices already(I usually do before buying anything). I have the manual downloaded too but I still haven't looked at it since it'll be a while before I can get back to the place it's at. A couple of typhoons are making the boat ride to and back uncomfortable if not...
